Emergency delegation to Chiapas

from the Mexico Solidarity Network, Sep 22, 1998

The Mexico Solidarity Network invites you to participate in an urgent delegation to Mexico City and Chiapas. You can help deliver funds, collected in a nation-wide campaign, to the Diocese of San Cristobal and Enlace Civil for indigenous communities suffering famine in the highlands and jungle areas, and for victims of flooding along the coast. The delegation will investigate conditions in both parts of the country, and prepare a report for an ongoing relief campaign organized by dozens of NGOs in the US.

Delegates will spend two days in Mexico City meeting with leaders of human rights and community organizations. Representatives of US-based NGOs will join with Mexican NGOs to announce a four month relief effort organized by dozens of organizations in the US. The delegation will then travel to Chiapas and investigate conditions along the coast, and in indigenous communities in the highlands and the selva. A report based on these first-hand observations will form the basis of a four month campaign to collect funds for all three areas.

This delegation is an extension of the already planned Oct. 10-17 Mexico Solidarity Network Friendship delegation. Deteriorating conditions in the indigenous communities combined with the recent flooding along the coast motivated the Mexico Solidarity Network to respond quickly and decisively. You can make a difference. Join this delegation and become part of the solution.
