Contribute to Chiapas relief fund

from Mexico Solidarity Network, Oct 20, 1998

The Mexico solidarity movement is responding generously to famine conditions in indigenous communities and to flood victims in the coastal areas of Chiapas. In the past month, organizations and individuals have sent over $35,000 for relief efforts, including $17,000 sent to Enlace Civil and the Diocese of San Cristobal by the Mexico Solidarity Network last week. This represents a substantial mobilization on the part of solidarity activists throughout the US.

The donations have been generous, but the needs are increasing. A Mexico Solidarity Network delegation just returned from Chiapas and is preparing a report on the famine and flood victims (available in late October at www.mexicosolidarity.org). Food shortages in indigenous communities are particularly acute, and are expected to get worse through the end of the year. Damage from the "biblical" flooding of September may never be fully repaired. Aid mismanagement by the ruling PRI party, the army and the Red Cross only serve to complicate an already disastrous situation.

In early November, a 15-minute video documenting severe food shortages and the use of hunger in the government's low intensity warfare will be available. The video was largely shot and edited by indigenous youth working with the Chiapas Media Project. The video will be a useful fundraising and education tool. To order a copy send $15 to Chiapas Media Project, 4834 N Springfield, Chicago IL 60625.

Many member organizations of the Mexico Solidarity Network have made commitments to monthly contributions of $100 to $500 for the next four months. The Mexico Solidarity Network calls on people of conscience to stand with our sisters and brothers of Chiapas and join the Emergency Hunger and Flood Campaign. Make a monthly commitment from now through January. When thousands of us join together, we can make a difference. Donations will be sent directly to Enlace Civil and the Diocese of San Cristobal, two organizations will a long history of honesty and a proven capacity for reaching those who are most in need. Make tax-deductible donations payable to Mexico Solidarity Network, 1247 E St SE, Washington DC 20003.
