National conference on Mexico-US relations announced

by Tom Hansen, Jul 26, 1999

The Mexico Solidarity Network invites you to: "Strengthening Our Bi-national Alliances" -- the second National Conference on Mexico-US relations from Sept. 23-26 in Washington, DC.

Join 400-500 participants working in solidarity, taking action and building lasting bi-national coalitions. The conference -- dedicated to struggles for justice, dignity, and democracy -- will focus on 6 major themes:

  • Chiapas,
  • neo-liberalism (NAFTA),
  • militarization,
  • immigration/ border issues,
  • democratization, and
  • independent labor organizing.
Together, we can positively shape the future of US-Mexico relations.

Grassroots representatives from Mexican civil society and US-based activists will conduct a series of workshops and plenary sessions focused on education, strategizing and action. To date, we have already confirmed:

  • COCOPA member Gilberto Lopez y Rivas;
  • Mercedes Osuna of Enlace Civil;
  • Alianza Civica's Silvia Alonzo;
  • Human Rights activist Hilda Navarrete (Guerrero);
  • Berta Lujan of the FAT;
  • Mariclair Acosta, director of the Center for Defense and Promotion of Human Rights;
  • CENCOS director Cecilia Sanchez; and
  • Edgar Cortez, director of Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez Human Rights Center.

Several other Mexican and U.S. activists that have been key in building cross-border solidarity with Mexico have also been invited to participate.

The conference will result in bi-national strategies for confronting common struggles. Those who register for the Mexico Solidarity Network's Conference will be concurrently registered for the 50 Years is Enough Network Conference. The Mexico Solidarity Network's second national conference on US-Mexico relations marks an important step in developing common and effective bi-national grassroots strategies. The Mexico Solidarity Network is a coalition of 75 organizations that builds links between civil society on both sides of the border in a search for alternatives to capital centered globalization. The Network supports struggles for democracy, justice, dignity and human rights.
