UnConventional Coverage -- A Supplement to the Usual News

"UnConventional Coverage" -- special daily programs during the 1996 Republican and Democratic Conventions -- will provide a unique window on key issues related to the conventions. These live, 59-minute feeds (free to all radio stations with access to the satellite) will originate from San Diego and Chicago, the cities hosting the conventions in August.

Instead of providing hard news coverage of events inside the convention hall, "UnConventional Coverage" will go below the surface of political rhetoric and staged media events to dig for social realities that too often remain obscured.

Here are ten of the confirmed guests who will appear on "UnConventional Coverage":

"UnConventional Coverage" is being produced by the National Radio Project staff of "Making Contact," the weekly public-affairs program that now airs on more than 70 noncommercial radio stations nationwide. (This year, "UnConventional Coverage" will involve many of the same producers who, in 1992, provided daily coverage called "Convention Watch" to radio stations across the United States.)

Suitable for airing live or on a tape-delay basis later in the day, "UnConventional Coverage" will be a nonpartisan, hard-hitting supplement to traditional news coverage. Heard on "UnConventional Coverage" will be thoughtful grassroots voices unheard from the podiums of either party.

All of the 59-minute feeds for "UnConventional Coverage" will start at 13:00 ET, on satellite channel A72.7. Here's the schedule:

UNCONVENTIONAL COVERAGE -- DIRECT FROM SAN DIEGO
(During the Republican National Convention)
Monday-Friday, August 12-16

UNCONVENTIONAL COVERAGE -- DIRECT FROM CHICAGO
(During the Democratic National Convention)
Monday-Friday, August 26-30

Each day's 59-minute feed will include one minute of music during a cutaway beginning at 29 minutes into the program.
