Are Republicans Trying to Silence Voters in 2026 and Beyond?

We are standing at a crossroads where the very foundation of our representative democracy is being dismantled in broad daylight. As we look toward the 2026 midterms, a coordinated effort is underway to ensure that certain voices—particularly those in Black and Brown communities—are never heard at the ballot box. We must ask ourselves the hard question: are Republicans trying to silence voters in 2026 and beyond? The evidence suggests a resounding yes.

This morning, April 29, 2026, the Supreme Court issued a devastating blow to the remains of the Voting Rights Act in Callais v. Louisiana. By striking down a map that provided fair representation to Black voters, the Court has created a legal trap. They have ruled that acknowledging race to fix proven racial discrimination is itself unconstitutional. This decision effectively renders Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act a "dead letter," giving a green light to partisan operatives to rig maps nationwide.

In Florida, we see this strategy in motion right now. The Florida General Assembly is convening a special session this week to push through a map proposed by Governor Ron DeSantis. This map is a blatant attempt to net Republicans additional seats in the House of Representatives by eliminating districts where minority voters currently elect candidates of their choice. They are banking on the fact that, under this new Supreme Court precedent, their hands will be "tied" when it comes to protecting the rights of Black and Latino Floridians.

Meanwhile, the redistricting battle in Virginia has exposed the lengths to which the opposition will go to maintain power. While Virginia voters recently fought back by approving a fairer map, the national Republican apparatus continues to wage a war of litigation to overturn the will of the people. They are fighting for a future where the lines on a map matter more than the people living within them.

As the Founder of the Heartbeat Movement and the Chair of the Protecting Ohioans’ Constitutional Rights committee, I know that accountability is the only cure for a system that seeks to protect itself at the expense of the people.

Whether it is ending qualified immunity or fighting for fair districts, the struggle is the same: we are demanding a government that is answerable to all of us, not just a select few. This is how an election is stolen before a single vote is cast. They are not just changing the rules; they are making sure the votes that are cast simply do not matter.

We cannot remain silent while the "Fourth Estate" of our democracy is eroded by those who fear a fair count. We must organize, we must advocate, and we must reclaim our truth before the 2026 midterms are mapped away forever.
