The Fall of Troy: How Desires and Recklessness Destroy Empires

In the ancient annals of history, the city of Troy fell not merely because of a wooden horse, but because of the unchecked desires and fatal pride of those who governed it. Today, we witness a modern parallel in our own political landscape. As an advocate for transparency, accountability, and the constitutional rights of Ohioans, I must draw attention to the moral collapse unfolding within the Republican party—a collapse fueled by the protection of the powerful at the expense of justice. ​

We are updating our readers on the recent developments regarding Representative Max Miller. Despite serious, documented allegations of domestic abuse made by his ex-wife—including harrowing accounts of physical violence—Miller has decided to remain in his re-election race for Ohio’s 7th Congressional District. The deadline for him to withdraw, which would have allowed for a party replacement, passed this past Monday. ​Miller’s decision to cling to his seat, seemingly emboldened by support from national party leadership, ignores the gravity of these accusations. 

This is a betrayal of the trust placed in our public servants. ​Sadly, this is not an isolated instance of moral decay. These individuals, along with others facing severe allegations, are absolute "oath violators" who swore to honor the Constitution, yet chose instead to abuse the public trust. The Republican Party has faced a mounting series of scandals involving members forced to step down or face profound public scrutiny. Notable figures whose careers have imploded amidst misconduct allegations include: 

​Chuck Edwards (R-NC): Withdrew from his re-election campaign following a House Ethics Committee investigation that concluded he fostered a hostile work environment and engaged in sexual harassment toward young female staffers. 

​Eric Swalwell (D-CA): Resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct involving former staffers. ​

Tony Gonzales (R-TX): Resigned following revelations of a sexual relationship with a staffer under tragic circumstances. ​

While some have stepped down under pressure, others remain to test the conscience of the electorate, such as Representative Cory Mills (R-FL), who continues to serve despite a history of allegations and ongoing investigations. ​When a party prioritizes the preservation of power over the basic safety and dignity of women, families, and the sacred oaths of public office, it invites its own destruction. Just as the walls of Troy could not protect a kingdom rotted from within, the political machinery of the GOP cannot hide the reality of these actions. ​

We must ask ourselves: what kind of "empire" are we building if we allow those who violate their oaths and abuse their power to lead us? We must hold our representatives accountable. The heartbeat of our democracy depends on it. ​
