Heartbeat Movement Inc. stands in solidarity with Black women
Florida State Representative Angie Nixon
Heartbeat Movement Inc. stands in absolute solidarity with Black women in leadership who continuously face coordinated, dehumanizing attacks designed to undermine their authority, silence their advocacy, and erase their contributions to systemic reform. We strongly condemn both the explicit, racist hostility directed at elected Black women across the country and the establishment political double-dealing that sacrifices constitutional civil rights for partisan convenience across the state of Ohio.
1. The Weaponization of Explicit Racism Against Black Female Leaders
When Black women step into positions of authority to challenge entrenched institutional power, political bad actors frequently abandon policy debate in favor of vicious personal destruction. We saw this dynamic clearly when far-right political activist Laura Loomer targeted Florida State Representative Angie Nixon—the first Black woman to win the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Florida—alongside Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and Congressional leaders including Representatives Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, and Cori Bush.
Loomer launched the assault by stating publicly: "I'm gonna call out the ghetto black b*****s." When Representative Nixon pushed back against the slur, the rhetoric escalated into dehumanizing tropes regarding "Ebonics," threats to "bark" and "tug" her leash and replacing her elected title with racially charged nicknames.
This isn't an isolated incident; it reflects a clear, recurring pattern across the nation and within Ohio politics:
Targeted Dehumanization: Slurs and racist tropes are routinely deployed against Black women in leadership to discredit their authority, lived experience, and systemic critiques.
Double Standards: White establishment figures who navigate political structures receive deference, while Black women who demand accountability face intense public hostility, racialized insults, and institutional isolation.
2. Establishment Double-Dealing on Ohio Civil Rights
While establishment political leaders publicly claim allegiance to equality, their legislative actions—and intentional silences—reveal a deep-seated betrayal of frontline communities.
Performative Allyship: Political figures participate in public tributes while quietly dismantling or stalling meaningful legislative reform behind closed doors.
Protecting the Status Quo: Systemic efforts—such as ending qualified immunity through our grassroot initiatives and creating direct civil recourse for citizens whose constitutional rights are violated—are repeatedly blocked by establishment interests seeking to shield state actors from accountability.
Exploitation of Grassroots Labor: The political apparatus relies heavily on the voter mobilization and community organizing led by Black women yet routinely denies those same leaders a meaningful seat at the decision-making table.
3. Our Call to Action
Heartbeat Movement Inc. refuses to allow political lip service or weaponized hostility to replace actual structural protection.
We call on community members, coalition partners, and allies across Ohio to demand:
Uncompromising Accountability: An unequivocal end to inflammatory, racially biased attacks on Black women leading policy and grassroots initiatives.
Substantive Civil Rights Protection: Immediate legislative and ballot action that enshrines full citizen protection, transparency, and civil liability for rights deprivations in Ohio law.
Defense of Grassroots Leadership: Concrete institutional and legal support for directly impacted leaders fighting for constitutional equal protection. "The Constitution’s promise of equal protection cannot remain a selective privilege. We will not sit idle while Black women in leadership are subjected to vile, dehumanizing slurs for demanding that the law apply equally to everyone.” ~ Miss Cynthia Denise Brown, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Heartbeat Movement Inc.
