When you prioritize principles, you decide what is right or wrong for you, regardless of whether others will praise you or whether doing so will bring you fame. That's precisely what the Lebanese child chess star Lauren Abdel Samad did during the 2026 World Youth Championship. Lauren withdrew from two matches against Israeli opponents at the FIDE World Cadets Cup in Batumi, Georgia.
Lauren was born in 2018 in the Chouf region of Lebanon, a small area with limited access to elite chess infrastructure. She recently gained prominence after winning first place in national competitions and qualifying to represent Lebanon at the FIDE World Cadets Cup in Georgia.
Her achievements stand out because:
- She has drawn regional and international attention for her rapid rise in competitive chess.
- She took a high-profile ethical stance during a world championship event.
What Makes Lauren Abdel Samad Special
- She has demonstrated exceptional talent at an early age.
- She qualified to represent Lebanon in the Under-8 division of the World Youth Chess Championship in Georgia at the age of seven.
- She is known locally as "the miracle child" because she is the first Lebanese girl in her age group to reach this level.
- She won first place in her age category at a major tournament hosted by the Lebanese American University (LAU).
- Her FIDE profile confirms that she is officially registered with the International Chess Federation under ID No. 5329728.
A Principled Stance on the World Stage

The withdrawals were recorded as automatic losses, affecting her final ranking.
Her family stated that she made the decision knowingly, based on her personal and political convictions.
This act drew significant media attention across Lebanon and the region, making her not only a chess talent but also a symbol of political expression in youth sports.
Rapid Rise Despite Limited Resources
- Lebanon has a relatively small competitive chess community.
- Few players—especially girls—reach international youth championships at such a young age.
- Her success is often portrayed as a story of determination, family support, and natural talent.
What Makes Her Notable?
- Early qualification for international competition.
- The first Lebanese girl under the age of eight to reach the World Youth Championship level.
- Lauren is a talented player with an impressive record, having won World Championship games in as little as three minutes.
The Real Reasons Lauren Withdrew from the Competition
The decision comes amid Lebanon's longstanding policy discouraging normalization with Israel, with several Lebanese athletes having previously declined to compete against Israeli opponents in international events. Under FIDE regulations, such withdrawals are generally recorded as forfeits without additional disciplinary action.
This girl is more honorable than Lebanese President Joey Aoun, who just recognized the State of Israel despite the fact that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) occupied approximately 10% of Lebanon and stated they would remain there permanently. Aoun agreed to have the Lebanese Army act as guard dogs for Israel and to fight the Lebanese resistance fighters. Hezbollah fighters are defending their country from a ruthless and brutal army that has killed as of this writing 4,274 Lebanese people and injured 12,196 more. Israel turned the capital, Beirut, and much of southern Lebanon into what looks like Gaza. Not to mention that the IDF also took an undisclosed number of hostages from Lebanon.
"Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have committed numerous violations of the laws of war in Lebanon with total impunity, including apparently deliberate or indiscriminate attacks on journalists, civilians, medics, financial institutions, reconstruction-related facilities, and peacekeepers, in addition to the widespread and unlawful use of white phosphorus in populated areas, among other violations." — Human Rights Watch report, June 11, 2026.
Finally, I would say that Lauren Abdel Samad's integrity is a rare and shining light in a world often tempted by shortcuts and self-interest. She chose what she believed was right, even though it cost her dearly, proving that her values are not for sale. Her courage commands respect, and her example reminds us that true success is measured not by what we gain, but by what we refuse to compromise. Thank you, Lauren Abdel Samad!
