Today, May 1, 2026, as the "No Kings" banner flies from the statehouse in Columbus to the streets of Cleveland and across the heart of America, we are witnessing more than just a labor strike. We are seeing a national rejection of a future that has already been scripted for us. While the administration moves forward with the "Project 2025" agenda – a calculated blueprint to dismantle the federal workforce and consolidate executive power – the people have decided to stop the machine.
This "May Day Strong" boycott is our collective response to a vision of governance that treats the Constitution as a suggestion. We are currently facing the shadow of Senate Bill 293, a law that enables systematic voter purges, while the Senate Judiciary Committee weighs House Bill 20, which seeks to criminalize the citizen journalists of the Fourth Estate for documenting police activity. Most alarming is the renewed attempt to resurrect the failed 60 percent threshold for citizen-led ballot initiatives a transparent power grab designed to silence the majority because the "kings" know we are ready to win.
But we must look at the broader, bloodier picture. As our sons and daughters are deployed to the Strait of Hormuz in a war with Iran that serves as a backdrop for profiteering, the true nature of this greed is exposed. We are witnessing what many are calling the "Epstein War" a conflict where the elite, shielded by the same shadows that protected the worst among them for decades, are seeing their portfolios surge while the working class pays the bill in blood and inflation. While our gas prices at home climb toward $5.00, the "defense" contractors and the 1 percent are reaping record dividends. They are getting richer off a conflict that lacks congressional authorization and moral clarity.
At the Heartbeat Movement, our mission has always been clear: government accountability at every level. Our push for the Protecting Ohioans Constitutional Rights initiative for the 2026 cycle is the legislative armor we are building to deflect this overreach. We are fighting to ensure that no government actor, protected by the shield of Qualified Immunity, can violate the rights of the citizenry without consequence whether on a Columbus street corner or through the machinery of an unauthorized war.
The digital Fourth Estate is documenting this movement in real-time. Today’s economic blackout is a declaration that our rights are not for sale and our democracy is not a project to be "overhauled" by special interests who profit from chaos. We are the architects of accountability. Today, we lay the cornerstone of a future where the law applies to everyone, and the power belongs to us all.
