When Ethiopian American lawyer Melat Kiros could no longer bear to witness the suffering in Gaza, she published a message condemning what she viewed as the complicity of American law firms in suppressing pro-Palestinian voices and protests. The following day, her law firm gave her an ultimatum: delete the post or lose your job.
Melat did not have to think twice. The choice was clear
She refused to remain silent while children and women were being killed with American-made weapons and, in her view, at the hands of Israel, as much of the world watched without taking meaningful action.
Melat's response was simple:
"I will not delete the post."
The firm fired her.

Melat Kiros was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1997, shortly before her father won a U.S. Diversity Visa. Her family immigrated to the United States while she was still an infant and settled in Aurora, Colorado, where she grew up.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Economics from Washington College in 2018. In 2022, she received her Juris Doctor from the University of Notre Dame Law School. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver.
Melat Kiros Made History
Melat decided to take her advocacy for Palestine to the next level. She joined protest movements, became active on social media, and eventually ran for Congress in Colorado's 1st Congressional District against Rep. Diana DeGette, who had represented the district for three decades—longer than Melat had been alive.
The 29-year-old lawyer, Ph.D. student, and Democratic Socialist won the Democratic nomination after defeating the 15-term incumbent in the 2026 Democratic primary. Her victory immediately drew national attention and was widely described as one of the biggest political upsets of the election cycle.
Her campaign also made history. According to Colorado Newsline, Kiros became the first self-identified democratic socialist and the first Black woman elected to Congress from Colorado.
Melat sacrificed a promising legal career because she refused to compromise her principles. Today, she is preparing to serve in Congress, where she will have a congressional office, professional staff, and the opportunity to help shape national policy.
