Still alive after two lethal doses?
In a stunning twist of events, Tennessee failed to execute #ChristaPike Wednesday night - the second failed execution this year.
Originally scheduled for execution at 10am CT, Christa Pike was granted a last minute reprieve by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.
- Of course the State could not let that stand and appealed immediately.
- It wasn’t until some 8 hours after the original scheduled execution that the State of Tennessee was given the go ahead.
NOTHING went as planned… an outcome that Christa and her legal team warned of.
The same physician who presided over the failed execution of Tony Carruthers earlier this year was also involved in Wednesday’s fiasco.
After the first lethal dose of pentobarbital failed to kill Christa, they administered another.
- More than an hour later she was still alive.
- Emergency services showed up at the prison and hauled her off.
- It has been confirmed that she is STILL ALIVE, but remains in critical condition.
It is unclear what comes next, if she’ll ultimately survive, or what kind of impact receiving two massive, deadly doses of the barbiturate will have on a living person.
TDOC officials closed the curtain to the witness chamber multiple times. Media reports that they could audibly still hear her breathing while curtains remained closed.
- Ultimately, they were escorted out while it was clear Christa was still alive.
What’s next: In light of last night’s massive failure, Gov. Lee called off executions for the rest of the year and ordered an independent investigation into the State’s execution failures.
This is the second round of botched executions seen in Tennessee under Gov. Lee.)ily influenced by others.
