Most Americans have spent the past couple weeks focused on staying safe and protecting their families. President Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency, on the other hand, has been working with fossil fuel companies to relax the regulations that protect the air we breathe and the planet we share. Last week, EPA announced it would not enforce pollution regulations for fossil fuel plants and other facilities indefinitely, effectively giving polluters a free pass.
Floridians are calling on Governor Ron DeSantis to immediately take all the possible steps, along with the local and federal government, to protect farmworkers in Immokalee from the COVID-19 pandemic, starting with the following urgent measures:
Set up a field hospital in Immokalee in order to provide quarantine space and treatment for farmworkers with positive cases of COVID-19 Provide personal protective gear and hand sanitizer to farmworkers, given that they are an “essential workforce” Provide free, accessible COVID-19 tests in Immokalee Allocate public funds for economic relief for Florida farmworkersUnless these measures are taken, Immokalee will become an epicenter of contagion with grave consequences not only for the agricultural community of Immokalee but also for the agricultural industry of Florida and the food supply chain of the entire United States.
Make no mistake: Immokalee is like dry tinder in the path of a wildfire.

Bill McKibben is an author and environmentalist who in 2014 was awarded the Right Livelihood Prize, sometimes called the ‘alternative Nobel.’ His 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change.
Bill is a founder of 350.org, the first planet-wide, grassroots climate change movement, which has organized 20,000 rallies around the world, spearheaded the resistance to the Keystone Pipeline, and launched the fast-growing fossil fuel divestment movement.
A bill passed yesterday will extend vote-by-mail until April 28th.
From Ohio Environmental Council:
Ohio immigrants, detained people and family members, lawyers, and grassroots leaders have four demands of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies/courts to protect incarcerated people and immigrants from COVID-19.
1) Immediately and dramatically reduce the number of people in Ohio jails and prisons, including (but not limited to) immigration detainees;
2) Suspend deportations, immigration arrests, and in-person ICE and USCIS appointments;
3) Close the Cleveland Immigration Court, except for detained bond hearings conducted remotely; and
4) Ensure inmates have access to free soap, hand sanitizer, health care, and phone and video calls.
A new bill, House Bill 538, was introduced that would automatically ban abortion in Ohio following a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court overturning or severely limiting the Roe v. Wade decision. Addressing this new legislation, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said: “Abortion care is fundamental to equality and autonomy. Representative John Becker, Senator Kristina Roegner, and their ultra-conservative cronies despise those personal freedoms and want to make people in Ohio bend to their will. We won’t do it. Every person deserves to be able to make their own reproductive health care decisions so they can chart their own paths and futures. All people deserve quality affordable abortion care in their communities without stigma, shame, or delay.” Copeland continued, “It’s every Ohioans’ human right to make their own decisions about their bodies, their lives, and their futures. The abortion restrictions we’re seeing debated at the Ohio Statehouse and at the U.S. Supreme Court would deprive people of their ability to make their own health care decisions.
