The demonstrations against Milo Yiannopolis's planned speech in Berkeley, and subsequent efforts to shut down the Right, have renewed debate on the role of free speech within the Left and society more broadly. In light of these debates, how should the Left understand free speech, and the relationship between speech and power? What has the role of socialists been in struggles for free speech?
To take on these questions, we will read articles that assess the experiences of the demonstrations in Berkeley and a more recent attempt to shut-down a right-wing "Free speech" rally in Boston.
Suggested readings:
"Thousands confront the right in Berkeley," Mukund Rathi

"The far right pollutes Boston Common," Alpana Mehta and Michael Fiorentino

Do you believe in reproductive justice for all? Come have a drink or two with likeminded, pro-choice people.
In May, we will be raising money for
Founder's Women's Health Center
(http://www.founderswhc.com/), which is <still> fighting to keep its doors open and provide top quality health care to the women of Columbus.
What is the Reproductive Health Happy Hour? It’s a networking event for sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice professionals, advocates, and allies. Come when you can and leave when you need to...it’s a casual meet-up.
We ask for a $5 donation to a pro-choice charity! Please bring cash. We don't have the ability to accept credit card donations. Your donation gets you a drink (beer on tap or well drink) on the house.
Drink specials include:
$3 wells
$2 miller high life tall boys
$1 off drafts
The address is 1057 N. 4th St, Columbus, OH 43201 and there is a parking lot on Detroit!
Tuesday, May 23, 5:30-7pm
Bluestone, 583 E. Broad St.
Columbus has a problem with poor City leadership accountability. Mayor Andrew Ginther, City Council, and the Columbus Police Department (CPD) are only interested in protecting their "friends" over working families priced out of their neighborhoods, and Black communities left to bury their loved ones at the hands of police.
This Tuesday at the Bluestone, Mayor Ginther is hosting a dinner for his friends at $500 to $5000 a plate, as families struggle to make ends meet, and the community is left to support the grieving families of Henry Green, Tyre King, Jaron Thomas, and other Black residents who have been followed, harassed, or killed by CPD.
Tuesday, May 23, 8am

We will gather at 8am to catch the attention of executives and Wendy's employees on their way into work, and to show morning rush hour why everyone should be boycotting.

Justice for Tyre King Vigil
Friday, May 19, 6-9pm
18th and Madison Streets, near east side Columbus
The Grand Jury is convening this Friday to decide whether or not the officer who killed Tyre King should have to face an open trial. We are not expecting justice. Prosecutor Ron O'Brien has NEVER held CPD accountable for a lethal shooting so we are expecting the system to fail the community once again.
We will gather in the school yard of Douglas Elementary near the site where Tyre's life was lost Friday evening. We are mourning the tragic loss of life and the lack of justice for him and all the victims of police violence in Columbus.
Join us and find out ways you can join the movement to fight for police accountability and real investments in the programs that actually keep communities safe.
Columbus Central SDA Church will be hosting the family in the time following the announcement.
