Community Shares was established in 1993 by a group of nonprofits for the purpose of fundraising on their behalf through workplace giving campaigns. Through these campaigns, each individual donor gets to decide which charity or charities will receive their donation based on which organization is working on the issues and causes they care about most in their community.
There are nearly 60 member agencies working on local issues in the following categories: Animal Welfare and Rights, Civic Involvement and an Inclusive, United Community, Civil Action and Social Justice, Ensuring Affordable, Accessible Housing, Fighting Hunger and Malnutrition, Fostering Literacy, Education and the Arts, Healthy Lifestyles and Choices, HIV/AIDS Care and Support, Preservation and Environmental Protection, Promoting the Potential of Individuals Violence Prevention and Safety, and Youth-Focused Services. The Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism, the non-profit organization that published The Free Press through the years, is a founding and current member of Community Shares.
Simply Living will hold its 10thannual fundraiser on Wednesday, October 28that the Boat House restaurant at Confluence Park in downtown Columbus, located at 679 W Spring Street. More than 300 people are expected to enjoy a complimentary luncheon in this beautiful setting where the Scioto and Olentangy rivers join.
This year the theme is Sustainable U: Learn, Engage, Transform! We will be highlighting our new initiative, Simply Living Sustainable University, which invites learners and instructors from the community to teach a wide variety of topics related to sustainability. Simply Living has earned a reputation as the hub of a wheel turning communities toward a sustainable future in central Ohio. The event is an opportunity to showcase the current work and future plans of Simply Living.
Columbus citizens need to be heard and represented.
• We need to take money out of politics and create a government that is responsive to its citizens.
• We need a Ward System so that citizens are represented in City Council
• We need a Community Review Board overseeing police activity on the city level.
• We will remain diligent and fearless and continue to make this the crisis that it is, confronting all city elected officials to ensure that this issue is front and center in the public sphere.

A non-partisan rally to peacefully protest the corruption at Columbus City Hall:
Where: Strongwater Food and Spirits, 401 W Town St, Columbus, Ohio 43215
When: Wed., Sept. 9 5-6:15pm
Mon, August 31, 10am, Public Utilities Commission of Ohio [PUCO], 180 E. Broad St.
The PUCO has postponed the hearings for the third time, to August 31, for which date we will reschedule our rally. Postponing is likely a good sign. PUCO has gotten a lot of push-back from the public, showing statistics that contradict the propaganda being fed to them by FirstEnergy. They will have a harder time rubberstamping the request and any complicity with industry would stand out.
Rally with the Sierra Club and others at the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. Tell them, “Don’t charge electric ratepayers $3 billion to bail out FirstEnergy’s unprofitable coal plants and the aging, accident-plagued Davis-Besse nuclear reactor!”
FirstEnergy led the fight that overturned Ohio’s renewable and efficiency standards. Boo! Now the PUCO is going to decide whether to hand them an enormous monetary gift, at the expense of the public health and purse.
No bailouts! No kidding!

Last week Senator Rob Portman voted for Trade Promotion Authority which will make it easier to pass job killing trade deals like the Trans Pacific Partnership. Join us this Thursday from 12:15 to 1pm at his office in downtown Columbus, 37 West Broad St., to hold him accountable and let him know that the people of Ohio won't stand for any more corporate trade deals that outsource good jobs! Contact Thomas Lee, tlee@cwa-union.org.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a massive trade deal that's being negotiated in secret among 12 countries.
TPP would be the largest trade deal in history. Including countries like Vietnam and Brunei, it would cover 792 million people and account for 40 percent of the world economy.
If the TPP goes into effect:
• More U.S. Jobs will be sent offshore
• Foreign Corporations get veto power over U.S. laws
• Buy American laws would be illegal
