A lecture by Juan González, co-host of the independent news program Democracy Now! and author of Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America and News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media.
This event is part of “50 Years Later,” a series that marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act. The series examines the historical context and current legacies of this act. Particularly, it highlights the varied and contradictory meanings of this bill for different migrant populations.

The monthly organizational meeting of the local affiliate of the national Move to Amend organization that is calling for a U.S. constitutional amendment to reverse several U.S. Supreme Court decisions during the past century and thereby to firmly establish that corporations are not people and that money is not free speech. Melanie Houston of the Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) will facilitate this interactive workshop and provide information on specific chemicals of concern, ways to reduce your family’s exposure and information on how you can get involved in an effort to strengthen laws on toxic chemicals.

Peggy Gish will speak about her recent time in the Kurdish region of Iraq with Christian Peacemaker Teams. With the recent events, she will likely have much to share. She will also have copies of her recent book, Walking Through Fire: Iraqis’ Struggle for Justice and Reconciliation, to sell. Peggy has been active in peace and justice work for almost 50 years. She has been working in Iraq with Christian Peacemaker Teams since October 2002.
This month’s program: “What should we do about global poverty?”
According to Thomas Pogge, poverty killed 416 million people in the 20th century. More died from poverty than from Stalin, Mao, and World War II combined.
The Maximin Project is working to eradicate global poverty, one thoughtfully-made connection at a time. Dr. Steven Brown created the Maximin Project in direct response to his experience as an ethics instructor in the Philosophy Department at The Ohio State University.
