Join SURJ [Showing Up For Racial Justice] Columbus this Spring as we host a racial justice film series fundraiser on March 18, April 15, and May 20. Each month, we will host a fundraiser during which we will screen a film that will be followed by a panel of speakers and discussion about various topics.

We will be requesting a sliding-scale donation; $5-$15 suggested. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. We will also have free popcorn and light refreshments.

Labor and human rights lawyer Dan Kovalik, from Pittsburgh, will address the life-and-death struggle of Venezuela, which is battling back the attempt of the United States government to strangle its economy and overthrow its socialist leadership.

Kovalik’s latest book, The Plot to Overthrow Venezuela: How the U.S. Is Orchestrating a Coup for Oil, will be out in June.

Since the dissolution of our former parent organization, the International Socialist Organization [ISO], we have worked to rebuild our organizing collective on a healthier basis.

Now, we are in the process of rethinking our approach to organizing and charting a path forward to building a new revolutionary socialist organization in Ohio.

We will be discussing whether the U.S. should pay reparations for descendants of slavery. Even though the United States ended slavery more than one hundred years ago, the effects of the atrocity still endure. How can the U.S. make up for that? Are reparations part of the answer to this complex issue? Read “The Case for Reparations” by Ta-Nehisi Coates in the June 2014 issue of The Atlantic prior to the discussion.
