My name is Bruce Harris. I am fed up with the status quo. My new years resolution is to force some changes. The easiest way for me to do that is through writing letters, sending emails, posting on the blogs.
But, I cannot do it alone. I need help from every corner of the country. I am asking people to join me in my letter writing campaign. I look at it this way. If the FCC listens to a handful of religious doomsday cultists from Texas they should listen to thousands of letters from us. If you are willing to help me then send a letter to the FCC. Also, forward this appeal or a similar one to everyone you know. Post it to all the blogs. The idea here is to make a loud, angry noise heard in Washington.
My first objective is to make Bill O’Reilly very uncomfortable. After that I plan on writing more letters about others on FOX News and my favorite Joseph Goebbels-style propagandist, Rush Limbaugh. With O’Reilly in mind I composed a general letter, pasted below, that I sent it to the FCC. I made some appropriate changes and sent the letter to Eliot Spitzer, Attorney General of New York. Why Spitzer? FOX News is located in NYC. For the heck of it I added John Ashcroft and the Department of Justice to my mailings. For good measure I sent hard copies as well as email.
Another way to bring pressure on Mr. O’Reilly is to send letters of complaint to his sponsors. Unfortunately they are too numerous to list here.

I wish to register my concerns about the program The O’Reilly Factor. I believe the behavior of Bill O’Reilly and his primary employer, the FOX News Network, to be illegal as defined by Federal Communications Commission regulations. I strongly urge the Federal Communications Commission immediately begin an investigation into Bill O’Reilly and the FOX News Network concerning these suspected illegal actions.
It is a question of law. On numerous occasions Mr. O’Reilly engages in “creative” use of facts. Call it lying, if you prefer. His abusive treatment of guests is intolerable, often pushing the limits of verbal assault. He has repeatedly uttered libelous and slanderous statements aimed at individuals, businesses and organizations. Mr. O’Reilly foments discord throughout our society by knowingly disseminating propaganda detrimental to American society.
It is a question of morals. As a public figure Mr. O’Reilly’s actions reflect directly upon American society. It is not in the best public interest for a figure as public as Mr. Reilly to brazenly flaunt accepted social mores concerning his irresponsible comments. His verbal attacks on third parties, his abusive treatment of program guests and, if news reports are correct, his criminal sexual harassment of one of his co-workers all fall outside socially acceptable behavior.
It is a question of Un-American activity. Through the dissemination of misinformation Mr. O’Reilly, in collusion with FOX News Network and other FOX News Network employees, attempts to subvert American democratic political processes, the backbone of our free society. This is a direct and concerted attack on the Constitution of the United States of America. I contend that Mr. O’Reilly and his associates have conspired to cause great harm to the public well-being by knowingly disseminating erroneous and often inflammatory propaganda in pursuit of personal monetary gain and political influence at the expense of American social well-being.
An example of Mr. O’Reilly’s scandalous verbal attacks can be found in his comments about the management and staff of Media Matters for America on August 7, 2004. This attack was a repeated on August 13, 2004, December 9, 2004 and December 14, 2004.
Additionally, on December 10, 2004, Mr. O’Reilly defamed MoveOn.Org and Air America Radio. These attacks were not isolated incidents. On November 26, 2004, Mr. O’Reilly falsely accused the Stevens Creek Elementary School of Cupertino, CA, of banning the Declaration of Independence for mentioning God.
Another example is a serial campaign of fear mongering. Begun on December 3, 2004, Mr. O’Reilly began a campaign aimed at defaming political interests and daily publications that do not agree with his viewpoint. Mr. O’Reilly has been joined in this inflammatory campaign by other employees of the FOX News Network.
I recognize Mr. O’Reilly’s right to free speech as guaranteed under the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States of America. However, Mr. O’Reilly and FOX News Network must recognize this right to free speech requires that they act ethically and responsibly, as must every citizen of the United States. Unfortunately, Mr. O’Reilly and his employer have not acted in a manner acceptable to American society as defined by the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
It is time the Federal Communications Commission returned to its intended purpose, that of regulating and policing the airwaves, and put some ethics back into news and pseudo-news broadcasting. Without a free, independent and ethical press American society is at risk. I respectfully demand the Federal Communications Commission perform the duties commission members are charged to perform.
It is time that Bill O’Reilly, his employer, his associates and similar broadcasters were held accountable for their immoral actions, illegal statements and un-American activities. Mr. O’Reilly, the FOX News Network and the people who are aiding and abetting Mr. O’Reilly’s actions must be held to the highest standards of American law and American social morals. Anything short of that is unacceptable in the eyes of patriotic law-abiding American citizens.
