We have reached a moment of absolute clarity: No one is coming to save us.
The "feasibility studies" are being written in real-time, and they have determined that our communities are targets for extraction, not investment. As we lead the charge for the Protecting Ohioans Constitutional Rights Initiative, we see a coordinated effort that goes beyond policy—it is a calculated campaign to dismantle Black Political Power in America.
Opulence as a Weapon
While the administration moves forward with a $400 million White House ballroom, they are simultaneously pulling the rug out from under the most vulnerable. This gilded hall, designed for the elite, stands in mocking contrast to the 400,000 seniors and children with disabilities whose SSI benefits are being slashed. We are watching our tax dollars build a palace while the financial lifelines that keep our families in their homes are stripped away.
This irony is sharpened by the political chaos surrounding the administration. We saw the arrest of Cole Allen, a 31-year-old from California who traveled across the country to target the administration. In his own words, Allen’s manifesto described a desire to "fix" the world by targeting officials he labeled as "pedophiles, rapists, and murderers." The government uses these threats to justify a state of permanent surveillance, yet they offer no security to the 400,000 disabled citizens they’ve just abandoned.
The Ballot or the Bullet: 2026
We must look back to the wisdom of the late Malcolm X, who famously warned of "The Ballot or the Bullet." He taught us that the ballot is like a bullet—a tool of precision that must not be wasted on "political con games" or trickery. Malcolm warned that when the government denies the people their constitutional rights, the peaceful option of the ballot is threatened.
In 2026, we see this "trickery" in the Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais. By gutting the Voting Rights Act, the Court is moving the target, attempting to render our "bullets" (our ballots) useless before they are even fired. This judicial blow is paired with a terrifying return to 19th-century expansionism.
By invoking a "Trump Doctrine" that mirrors the 1823 Monroe Doctrine—even declaring control over Cuba—the federal government is prioritizing raw power over constitutional accountability.
Ohio’s Legacy: The 1871 KKK Act and the Fourth Estate
Ohio’s own President, Ulysses S. Grant, signed the 1871 Civil Rights Act (the KKK Act) to hold every government actor and rogue entity accountable. It was designed to protect Black citizens from those who would use terror to steal their political power. However, we are seeing that same law being weaponized in a way Grant never intended.
We must not forget that the legal framework of this era was recently invoked in the arrests of Don Lennon and three other Black journalists. This is a direct shot at the Fourth Estate. When we arrest the storytellers who bring "Breaking News" to our communities, we are witnessing the rising tide of authoritarianism. They are using the very laws meant to protect us to silence the independent media that holds them accountable.
The Ballot is Our Final Defense
Malcolm X told us: "If that target is not within your reach, keep your ballot in your pocket." We are making the target reachable. Our Citizen-Led Ballot Amendment is our way of following Malcolm’s advice—shifting from being "political puppets" to becoming the architects of our own destiny. We aren't asking for permission from a system that doesn't see us. We are taking the fight directly to the Ohio Constitution to lock in our protections where no court or administration can reach them. If the goal is to end Black Political Power, our response must be to institutionalize that power through the ballot.
We are the Fourth Estate rising. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. It’s time to protect our heartbeat, our rights, and our future.
