Music
Back in the old days, a proto-version of the Black River’s described themselves as something called “Electric Americana.” I don’t know if they are still using that phrase in their marketing materials, but as I was working on this review for their latest album it jumped back into my mind and stayed there.
I am on record as arguing that Americana is not a type of music. Indeed, fresh off a pot of coffee in 2014 I referred to it as “this loathsome catch-all, this black hole of description, this perfidious non-thing.” Perhaps a bit over the top, but the years have not really changed my mind.
The Serpent Mound Star Knowledge Fall Equinox Peace Summit will honor the life of Chief Golden Light Eagle who was a great teacher, wisdom keeper and peace keeper. The outdoor event will offer the chance for visitors to enhance their cosmic connection to their deepest divine self and the universe as they are encouraged to pray for peace and enjoy music, workshops, vendors and presentations. Members of Chief’s family will be at the event which will also include chanting, drumming, light language transmissions, peace activists and peace ceremonies including an international peace flag ceremony, performance art, presentations by Native American elders and others. The outdoor event will take place on Friday, September 24 from 10AM-midnight, Saturday September 25 from 9:30 AM-midnight and Sunday September 26 from 9AM-6:30PM at Woodland Altars, 33200 SR 41, Peebles, Ohio. The site is located a short drive from the Serpent Mound.
I reviewed a couple of the June 12th releases
Schoolly D + Ice T – The Real Hardcore
Philly Rapper Schoolly D invented teenager rap marketing. Schoolly D’s album named Schoolly D released on Schoolly D Records boasted sex, money, and street respect. Schoolly D fathered every gangster rapper from Ice T to Biggie Smalls.
Record Store Day finds the Philly Legend releasing his recent recording with actor/rapper Ice T’s “The Real Hardcore” in vinyl form.
Recently, Ice found a moment in his schedule of starring in Geico Commercials and touring with Body Count to rap with Schoolly about Philly’s King of New York influencing Ice T’s renown L.A. Rap classic “6 In the Morning.” Schoolly D triumphs over a hard drum with reminding the listener he invented “Gucci Time.”
Ice-T and Schoolly D were teenagers who had to figure out how to navigate the 1980’s C.I.A. bringing crack cocaine in their neighborhoods while puberty and poverty existed.

Gucci Mane would agree that Schoolly D looked fresh in his watch and fly gold chain.

I was informed an important book was being re-released while I was planning to watch the new Fred Hampton movie.

We finally made it to the election after being inflicted with a plague, and police murders that resulted in protests, and tear gassing that would make a 14-year-old write a letter for Amnesty International to our government.
Who do you write letters to if elected officials are tear gassed?
I feel like the past seven years were unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.
With that said, currently I view our country from the eyes of a latchkey kid whose parents are divorcing.
Dad was awful at some point but now he isn’t as scary because you know his life is changing.
Trump says things that are either funny like a dad trying to be cool, and other times you’re still like: I truly understand why my mom wants to leave this guy. While mom had valid reasons to leave him there is part of me that appreciates that Trump does seem to sincerely like Lil’ Wayne, Kanye West and Ice Cube.
The fact you can find sincere rapport with Trump is kind of how I started to understand the loyalty people had towards him.
He might be part of things your ideals hate... but he is human.
Mom, I guess would be our voters.
The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved. So sayeth the book of Jeremiah, and this time I might even believe it. The chill has cut away at this most claustrophobic of summers, as an election puts a pit of dread in everyone’s stomach. As Dylan said in Desolation Row, when you asked how I was doing, was that some kind of joke?
It probably isn’t fair to view music through the prism of the time you first hear it. Or even rational really. Your favorite winter album might have been written by the pool at Caesar’s Palace. But that’s how we hear music, and into this autumn of discontent comes Linden Hollow with their new release “Light the Lanterns.”
The album is darkly lush, with brooding piano intros building to soaring choruses. Singer-Songwriter’s Rebecca McCusker’s keening lead vocals, often augmented by tight layers of harmony from Paige Vandiver and Emily Ng, run from childish curiosity to outright witchcraft. Ng’s violin adds haunting texture. But don’t write this off as folk music – when Vandiver’s drums kick in Linden is fully capable of rocking out.
