Some neighborhoods on the West Side are in dire need of compassionate, empathetic and shared experienced leadership. Welcome news is how a fresh-faced progressive Democrat – Hilltop resident Christine Cockley – is poised to win Ohio House District 6 this November, which encompasses most of Columbus’s West Side.
If anyone has any doubt whether a progressive is best qualified to take on the disheartening and daunting challenges of some West Side neighborhoods, just take a drive down Sullivant Avenue where poverty and despair continue to besiege several neighborhoods. Where the numbers of addicted and houseless keep growing – in lock step with the rising cost of housing, spurred on by landlord greed and the gentrification of some West Side neighborhoods.
Certainly, few from the Ohio GOP care much about the West Side, if rarely a thought. Local establishment Democrats, such as Mayor Ginther, have had plenty of time to affect change, but little has on Sullivant Avenue over the previous decade.

Dear neighbors, we see you. We love you. We respect and celebrate you. We are honored that you chose to make Ohio your home, the place where you could find safety, earn a living, establish yourself, and take care of your family.
Unfortunately, Ohio is home to irresponsible elected officials who are attempting to cling to power in the midst of a changing United States. They will say and do anything to stay on top, no matter who they hurt. But they do not represent the views of everyone in Ohio — not by a long shot.

Pre-2016, Ohio was the road to the White House. No Republican candidate had ever won the election without carrying the state, and no Democrat since Kennedy had won without the state. Since then, though, Ohio has slowly faded into obscurity in the election conversation. After Obama carried the state in 2008 with 51 percent of the vote, the Democratic share of the state has quickly slipped away, including an abysmal 43 percent in 2016.
So what’s changed? The first thing to look at is the number of counties won by each candidate, and the clear drop-off begins in 2016, with Trump’s election. Prior to that, the state had been competitive, but in 2016, Clinton won eight counties, down from the 17 that Obama had won previously. Trump appealed to white voters who felt disconnected from the Democrats' embrace of immigrants and other “special-interest groups,” as well as broadly appealing to both wealthy donors who benefited from his tax cuts and benefits for the rich as well as rural middle-class voters who were heavily socially conservative. These dynamics are apparent when you break down which counties Trump flipped from the Obama era.
This week's "Everybody Knows" show talks about our pervasive gun culture and songs that reflect it.

Early Saturday evening on June 29, members of the Dayton Police Department chased, shot down, and ultimately killed a teenager. The shooting occurred moments after they sped into the Negley Place neighborhood, where multiple young people were gathered outside. Families were present and outside all along the neighborhood streets.
Officers have not released the names of those who fired their weapons, nor have they released many details other than heavily edited and redacted body camera footage.
Rather than invite the Bureau of Criminal Investigation to review the officers’ conduct, as is proper procedure following an officer-involved shooting in the community, the Dayton Police Department has asked close ally Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office to review the incident, and has promised to conduct an internal investigation.
Ohio Families Unite Against Police Brutality, The FUDGE Foundation, Black Lives Matter Dayton, and OFUPAC have the following demands – 1. BCI must be invited in to investigate the conduct of DPD both during the July 29 incident and following.
