As immigration enforcement activity becomes more visible, many people are feeling uncertain, anxious, or unsure where to turn. Questions come up quickly. What happens if Immigration and Customs Enforcement ("ICE") shows up at my door? What do I have to do? What are my rights?
Clarity matters in moments like these. Fear thrives in confusion. Rights exist to provide structure, limits, and protection, especially when power is being exercised.
This article is meant to explain, in plain terms, what Your Rights are if you encounter ICE, whether at home or in public, and how to protect yourself without escalating a situation.
If ICE Comes to Your Home
Your home is one of the most protected places under the Constitution.
If someone claiming to be ICE comes to your door, you do not have to open it. You may ask who they are and why they are there, and you can do so with the door closed.
On Sunday, February 1 there were two vigils for Alex Pretti, Renee Good and other victims of ICE terror -- one at Weinland Park and one at the VA hospital in Columbus.

I am a member of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, and I also sit on its board of directors. Our president, Marc Murphy, wrote a statement for the organization in defense of journalist Don Lemon, who was arrested by the Trump regime for doing his job.
Don Lemon followed a protest into a church in Minneapolis, where the minister is an officer in ICE. Lemon had received a tip about the protest beforehand, so he went to the location to cover it. Donald Trump's Department of Justice figures that since Lemon knew beforehand of the protest, he must be a part of it. This displays either a total lack of understanding of how journalists often work or that the Trump administration is just out to get Don Lemon.
The Trump administration is escalating its attack on immigrant communities in Ohio, reinvigorating Operation Buckeye and preparing an all-out assault on Springfield’s Haitian communities. Ohioans are standing up to racist terror by disrupting business as usual and demanding no work, school, or shopping on January 30.
At 2:00pm January 29, faith leaders, community organizations, and students will hold a press conference at the Columbus Liberation Center, located at 1004 Parsons Ave, publicly announcing their endorsement of the January 30 shutdown and highlighting the urgency of responding to ICE’s escalations in Minneapolis.
Then, the Columbus Liberation Center will host a volunteer meeting and art build at 6:00pm, where working-class Ohioans will convene to discuss the need for a shutdown, preparing signs, banners, and outreach materials for January 30.

Just like every other major corporation that is flourishing in financial success, Ginther and this City Council will continue to ignore independent reports that the hundreds of millions of dollars handed out in tax abatements and TIF’s are counterproductive to the educational and social economic needs of Columbus school children and those who rely on social services. Two tax abatements are included on tonight’s City Council agenda.

Under the Trump administration, the Department of Homeland Security likes to claim that every immigrant is a criminal. But a new list shows the real criminals work for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol. Said Lynn Tramonte, Executive Director of the Ohio Immigrant Alliance, “As the government pushes to hire new agents rapidly, background checks and vetting processes are being tossed aside. How many more predators are in the process of joining these federal agencies? No one knows, and that is terrifying.”
A coalition of Ohio organizations today formalized its support for the ethics complaint which has been filed against Senator Brian Chavez. The endorsement letter was sent to the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee (JLEC) and demands an urgent, transparent investigation.
The letter, spearheaded by Washington County for Safe Drinking Water and signed by leading statewide groups, including Buckeye Environmental Network, Save Ohio Parks and FaCT Ohio, argues that the Senator’s alleged conflicts of interest and voting record—specifically within the Senate Energy Committee—suggest a pattern where personal financial gain was prioritized over the public good.
The letter of support states in pertinent part “The complaint alleges Chavez’s conflicts of interest regarding undisclosed business entities and fast-tracking legislation that could benefit these interests. When public officials with financial ties to an industry shape laws that directly benefit that industry, it undermines public trust across the entire state.”
“It’s about time,” was my first reaction when I saw the headline on Michelle Goldberg’s column saying “The Right is Furious with Liberal White Women.” This has been an uncontrollable thunderstorm steadily building in ferocity for years. Conservatives have known for a long time that this was a huge problem and have ignored it at their peril. Truthfully, it’s worse that just liberal white women, because they are losing women, one demographic at a time, on one issue after another. Let’s be honest. When you lose women, it’s just a matter of time before you lose everything.
I know something about liberal white women. I was raised by southern women, which is a whole different problem. If you combine that with politics, right or left, it’s “Katie, bar the door” and no surrender until it’s the last man standing. I’ve worked alongside women my whole career, both liberal and progressive, and there’s not much space between those poles, it just a matter of degree before something makes them explode. They never forget, and forgiving can be equally rare.

Yesterday, I mentioned Trump being heckled as he toured the Ford Motor Company factory in Detroit, Michigan, on Tuesday before he gave an economic speech chock-full of lies.
As Trump waddled through the factory, getting his ass kissed by executive Bill Ford, an employee shouted, “pedophile protector” at Trump. Trump responded in the most presidential manner in which he could muster, which was to shout, “fuck you,” and to flip the guy his middle finger.
