Throughout my political career, I have steadfastly defended the First Amendment, particularly the right to free speech. In 2002, I delivered a speech entitled A Prayer for America, where I challenged the rationale of the PATRIOT Act and questioned actions that infringed upon the constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech and protection against unreasonable searches.
My commitment to upholding free speech has been a guiding principle throughout my tenure in public service. While a Member of Congress, I consistently opposed measures that, in my view, threatened civil liberties, including the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007, which I believed was unconstitutional and could potentially criminalize thought. The bill passed. I was one of 6 members who voted against it.
The Current Assault on Free Speech on Campus
People in Columbus Ohio gathered on Saturday, February 8 at the Ohio Statehouse to defend immigrant families and end the war on Black America.
Today, students representing 10+ universities held a mock funeral for Ohio higher education in the face of continued efforts to pass SB83, best known as the Higher Education Destruction Act, bringing attention to how this dangerous legislation would cripple our education system and harm students.
Overwhelmingly, Ohio students have come out against SB83 and its companion bill HB151. If made into law, it would transform our higher education system for the worse, making it more costly, more restrictive, and less supportive for students. It attacks DEI (Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion) programs that help support underrepresented populations and would stifle academic freedom. An Ohio where SB83 becomes law is one where faculty must teach ‘both sides’ of climate change and universities can not do something as simple as take a stance on concepts as broad as “diversity” or “sustainability.”
This week the window opened for oil and gas companies to submit nominations to the Oil and Gas Land Management Commission for parcels of Ohio public land – including our state parks, forests, and wildlife areas – to be leased for oil and gas extraction.
Even before today’s opening, out-of-state company Encino Energy submitted a proposal to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, asking to build 14 fracking pads housing up to 89 frack wells around Salt Fork State Park.
Today the Ohio Oil and Gas Association called the opening of all of our taxpayer-owned public lands to oil and gas extraction a “ribbon-cutting” – as if our most treasured public lands are there for the industry to take what they want.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) abbreviation for the Portsmouth Nuclear Site is PORTS. The site is referred to locally as “the A-Plant” and continues to be referred to by agency officials and contractors simply as “Piketon,” the name of the town nearest the site. The site was used to enrich uranium, first for nuclear weapons and later for nuclear power. By far the worst contamination occurred because for decades the DOE brought in high level radioactive waste (to extract uranium from it) and ran it through all 3 process buildings (100 acres under roof). This contaminated the entire site with radioactive isotopes including plutonium, neptunium, and technetium.

The Libertarian Party of Ohio (LPO) announced today that it will be joining over 200 other organizations in the multi-partisan alliance against HJR1 and SJR2, the resolutions being advanced by Republicans in the Statehouse that could potentially usurp Ohioans’ right to amend the state constitution via a simple majority vote at the ballot box.
In 2013, when the LPO was gaining electoral traction with conservatives, independents and moderates alike, the Ohio Republican Party passed new ballot access laws to derail minor political parties' access to the ballot. The law –– called SB 193, but also known as “The John Kasich Re-Election Protection Act” –– was signed by then-Governor Kasich almost immediately.

Both Green Columbus and Columbus Recreation and Parks Department are hosting events where you can, for instance, fish in a recently stocked Linden pond or spend the day at Genoa Park visiting booths from 40 local environmentally friendly organizations while listening to bands, sipping on some cold beer and sample food trucks.
