Two weeks ago, I asked you to help conserve our oceans by asking the National Marine Fisheries Service to protect essential fish habitat in the ocean, and you responded - almost 8,000 people nationwide sent in their comments.

Now, a just-released comprehensive report on the state of our oceans from the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy confirms that our oceans are in trouble. The message of the report is clear - we need immediate action to protect and restore our fragile marine ecosystems.

The next step is for governors to submit their comments on the report to the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy. The Commissioners will then review these comments before finalizing the report and sending it to the President and Congress. This is a landmark opportunity to influence the future of our nation's ocean policy.

Please ask your governor to take advantage of this opportunity to conserve our oceans by supporting aggressive recommendations to protect and restore fragile ocean ecosystems. Then ask your family and friends to help by forwarding this e-mail to them.

Support Kathy Kelly, co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness and three-time nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize, began a four-month prison sentence April 7th for her actions of civil disobedience at the School of the Americas/WHISC and an ELF tower in Wisconsin.

Kathy and other prisoners at Pekin Federal Correctional Institute are strongly encouraging legislative action in support of House Resolution 4036 introduced by Rep. Danny Davis, (D, IL) on March 25, 2004. The resolution would revive the system of parole for federal inmates. Despite the appearance that S.150 is simply an extension of the current moratorium, it contains new, vague language that could threaten franchise fees and PEG access. The language of S. 150 could deprive municipalities of billions of dollars in tax and fee revenue. According to the National League of Cities, S.150 is as a preemption of local taxing authority and as an unfunded mandate (as determined by the Congressional Budget Office).

Our oceans are in crisis. Though the ocean seems limitless and bountiful, our oceans no longer sustain as much life as they used to. Overfishing, habitat destruction, and poor management have all led to this alarming decline in the health of our oceans.

Incredibly, special interests are working to convince the Bush administration to weaken existing ocean protections. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is currently asking the public to comment on how to revise the guidelines that protect essential fish habitat.

The Great Lakes are a national treasure critical to the public health, economy and quality of life in Illinois. However, the Lakes are threatened by serious ecological threats resulting in beach closings, fish that are unsafe to eat, lower water levels, and the loss of healthy shorelines.

Right now, Congress and the Bush administration have a historic opportunity to restore the health of the Great Lakes by funding Great Lakes restoration. It is critical that we generate public support from Great Lakes states like Illinois to convince our leaders to invest in the future of our region.

The future of the Sierra Club is at stake.

Outsiders are trying to take over the Club by placing stealth candidates on the Club's board ballot this year.  This is driven by anti-immigration activists, and their tactics are underhanded -- they aren't declaring their real issue positions to members. They hope that low participation and confusion will allow them to stack the board of directors.

You can stop this, but you must vote now in the Sierra Club board election.  You probably have already received the ballot in the mail.
