I wrote harsh things about Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois a couple of weeks ago, and the very next morning, his press aide, Tommy Vietor, was on the phone howling about inaccuracies. It was an illuminating conversation, indicative of the sort of instinctive reflexes at work in the office of a man already breathlessly touted as a possible vice presidential candidate in 2008, and maybe a presidential candidate somewhere down the road from there.
Obama's man took grave exception to my use of the word "distanced" to describe what his boss had done when Illinois' senior U.S. senator, Dick Durbin, got into trouble for likening conditions at Guantanamo to those in a Nazi or Stalin-era camp. This was one of Durbin's finer moments, so he duly paid the penalty of having to eat crow on the Senate floor. His fellow senator, Obama, did not support him in any way. Obama said, "Each and every one of us is going to make a mistake once in a while ... " He said this three times. This isn't distancing?

It's a crime. No kidding. But the media has it all wrong. As usual.
'Scooter' Libby finally outed 'Mr. Big,' the perpetrator of the heinous disclosure of the name of secret agent Valerie Plame. It was the President of United States himself -- in conspiracy with his Vice-President. Now the pundits are arguing over whether our war-a-holic President had the legal right to leak this national security information. But, that's a fake debate meant to distract you.
OK, let's accept the White House alibi that releasing Plame's identity was no crime. But if that's true, they've committed a BIGGER crime: Bush and Cheney knowingly withheld vital information from a grand jury investigation, a multimillion dollar inquiry the perps themselves authorized. That's akin to calling in a false fire alarm or calling the cops for a burglary that never happened -- but far, far worse. Let's not forget that in the hunt for the perpetrator of this non-crime, reporter Judith Miller went to jail.

“Where in the bible do you find all this stuff about patriotism?”
Jim Wallis, author of God's Politics: Why the Right Gets it Wrong, and the Left Doesn't Get It, held a public lecture at St. John Arena at The Ohio State University on March 28, 2006. The lecture was followed by audience dialogue.
Wallis began his lecture with a reference to a conference held in Washington DC that very day. The richest and most powerful leaders of religion, met with the leaders of the most powerful nation, to discuss the so-called “war against Christians”.
“I am a person of faith too, and that is not my faith!” He proclaimed that the religious right was created by the political right and needed a counter movement. Nonetheless, he insisted, to not create a mirror image of that on the other side of the spectrum.
As for the subject of poverty, Wallis revealed that three billion people live on less than $2 a day. 30,000 children die every day. He also referred to the consequences of poverty within the United States. When speaking at the notorious prison Sing Sing, he learned that all of the inmates originated from three or four neighborhoods in New York.

The unholy duo of Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell and Reverend Rod Parsley are back. Last year, they conspired to deliver the presidency to the corrupt and war-mongering Bush klan.
You see, Kenny and Rodney traveled the state together on behalf of Issue One – a constitutional amendment that made all forms of domestic partnership illegal in Ohio. Never mind that the Ohio legislature had already passed a Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that made gay marriage illegal in the state, or that there’s only one Democrat on the Ohio Supreme Court, so the chances of gays getting married anytime soon in Ohio were slim to none.
But, it was pimpin’ the baby Jesus time. With Ohio having lost more jobs than any other state but Michigan during the first four years of the Bush administration, and having lost more high-paying jobs than any other state in the year before the election, it was time to praise the Lord and pass the blasphemy.

You have heard of CAFTA. This is CYAF. Cover Your A** Fast. Bush has nominated someone in his lame duck soon to be scandalized second term whom he thinks will Cover his tail if all his misdeeds regarding torture, unlawful detention, violation of international law and Geneva Conventions, election fraud, and other heinous high crimes comes home to roost in a big constitutional way before the Supreme Court. Half the country hopes like hell it will.
I don't think that the Supreme Court nominee should be someone who is so little qualified and mainly only qualified for her CYAF features and women's intuition.
I don't find that the women is objectionable because she is a woman attorney -- a (cry me a river) hard luck story (as if thousands of others of us didn't have to deal with an ill parent and the financial pressures of a law school education) and a "first" - in a series of breakthroughs for women in ONE CITY in Texas. One City. Dallas. I applaud her for it. However, The greater the victim the better the Supreme Court Justice does not make.

Itinerant pundits touching down briefly in Paris lost no time in stigmatizing the French for their resounding Non! in Sunday's referendum on the proposed Constitution for Europe. The French were charged with selfishness, self-absorption, nostalgia for a lost empire, unwholesome obsession with Descartes and Jacobinism, plus other crimes too frightful for individual citation.
Actually, the French did something both logical and heroic. The logic, supposedly a French trait, is simple enough: European Union has always been sold as integration in which living standards would be leveled up, not down; in which Europe would act as counterweight to America.
But since the European Union (EU) has produced a leveling down, particularly since the recruitment to the EU of poorer nations (and lower wages) in Eastern Europe, and since the new constitution seemed to ratify closer alliance with the world's No. 1 imperial power, logic dictated a Non, and 55 percent of French voters, in a 70 percent turnout, accepted the dictate.

The political consequences from Ohio’s stolen 2005 presidential election have been made manifest. The two loudest and most unprincipled men in the state, Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell and the World Harvest Church’s Pastor Rod Parsley, have formed a disingenuous ebony and ivory right-wing political alliance.
Their goals are clear: to be the new Mack Daddys of the Ohio Republican Party and to pimp and play the economically desperate Ohioans.
Since the presidential election, the stats are now familiar: during the first four years of the Bush administration, Ohio lost more jobs than any state except Michigan; in the year prior to the 2004 election 330,000 manufacturing jobs disappeared from the Buckeye landscape, the most in the nation; and Ohio leads the U.S. in outsourcing well-educated young adults between the ages of 18-44.

President Yasir Arafat's coffin had barely touched the ground of his temporary tomb in Ramallah when United States President George Bush and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair jointly made yet another statement on Middle East Peace. Setting aside the fact that the timing of the statement was disrespectful and showed ignorance of the Islamic custom of observing three days of mourning to respect the dead, Bush and Blair, seemingly jovial over Arafat's passing, offered yet another non-starter for moving the region from its never-ending peace process to a 'lasting peace.'
It is said that one can fool some of the people, some of the time, but not all the people, all of the time. President Bush and Prime Minister Blair can't possibly believe Palestinians will fall for the same tricks that have been thrown at them for years now. The substance of the most recent Bush-Blair statement on November 12 is nothing more that an unmasked and feeble attempt to fool all of the Palestinians, yet again.
