Dear Free Press,
' Given the horrific reality of what the GOP is now doing to America and
the world, we should be profoundly thankful that the public is uneasy.
If Team Bush objects to being compared with the Nazi elite, perhaps it
should act less like it.
' Too much sad history has been told over the centuries by those who
failed to speak plainly and forcefully when the times demanded it.
' What the Republicans are doing to America and the world has been seen
before. And, it's been stopped before, but only by facing reality. '
I certainly agree with you on "outing" the Bush administration for what
it is.
I also believe that nothing will be accomplished in the "war on
terrorism" unless the Likud is similarly "outed", for it is as similar
to the "Nazi elite" as the Bush administration is.
It is now fashionable to draw the parallels that Senator Byrd has drawn,
but the Likud is still protected by the "criticize Israel and you are an
anti-Semite and comparable to the Nazi elite" tonic.
Greenpeace wants to bring our ship, the Esperanza, to the Port of Miami for
supplies and to bring people from the Miami area on board to discuss our
efforts to protect the Amazon rainforest.
But the Port of Miami is refusing us entry because John Ashcroft's Justice Department is prosecuting Greenpeace for a protest action last year. The New York Times has reported that this prosecution is "unusual and questionable." We intend to be exonerated.
Don't let the Port of Miami keep Greenpeace out and silence our voices. Contact the authorities in Miami and tell them that they should allow the Esperanza to dock in Miami!

SEATTLE -- What a gully-washer. What a frog-strangler. You ain't seen rain until you've seen record rain in Seattle. My wetness awareness has shot up thanks to this town. But next day, the sun came out -- and you could hardly tell the deluge had occurred.
And so it is in our public life -- the finger of fate writes, and having writ, moves on, leaving today's horrendous scandal back there with the snows of yesteryear, while we all focus on The Latest.
But there is one deception that will not go away. What happened to the weapons of mass destruction? "The intolerable reality is that they blatantly twisted intelligence information to fit preconceived policies," said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. "They lied to promote public relations, from the Jessica Lynch ordeal to the president's campaign landing on the USS Abraham Lincoln --- and about what war would cost our country."

Across the U.S., thousands of industrial facilities use and store hazardous chemicals in large quantities that pose great, and often unnecessary, risks to the general public. For example, 50 oil refineries across the country use hydrofluoric acid, putting over 15 million Americans at risk of injury or death from an accident or terrorist attack, even though safer alternatives exist that would eliminate the threat.
The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee is debating legislation supported by the chemical industry that would make security guidelines at chemical facilities voluntary and could exempt parts of the industry from any regulation.

explicitly compared the Bush media operation to that run by Herman Goering, mastermind
of the Nazi putsch against the German people.
On the same day, the Associated Press ran a national story linking Prescott Bush to Adolf Hitler. The lead read: "President Bush's grandfather was a director of a bank seized by the federal government because of its ties to a German industrialist who helped bankroll Adolf Hitler's rise to power, government documents show."
That night, CNN ran a "streamer" on the bottom of its all-news programming confirming that "declassified documents show Prescott Bush connections to Nazi finance."
Stories reminding the public that the grandfather of George W. Bush and his United Trust Bank were cited by the US government in 1942 for helping Hitler under the Trading With the Enemies Act, have now spread widely through the major meda.
What's going on here? Are these stories linking Team Bush to the Nazis irrelevant? Mere partisan politics? Or do they indicate a growing public concern with what is actually happening in Washington?

"It's agricultural asbestos!" That ripe phrase is how one British farmer described the menu of genetically modified (GM) crops being offered by Monsanto, a food biotechnology company in the United Kingdom. It became a rallying cry for farmers and environmentalists across Britain seeking to keep GM seeds out of English soil. For its part, Monsanto, and the Blair government, dismissed such charges as the ravings of Luddites. But now, a three-year study by British scientists, commissioned by Blair's own environment minister, Michael Meacher, reveals that the environmental risks of GM crops may be even greater than previously believed.

The most damning indictment of George W. Bush's administration occurred at Victorian's Midnight Cafe on October 17. The performance by social issue satirist and songster Dave Lippman gave new meaning to the Bush-CIA riff.
Lippman, portraying George Shrub, the world's only known singing CIA agent, invoked a political power last captured in the film "Bob Roberts." Lippman, like Tim Robbins, understands the need for singing reactionaries.
Shrub billed himself as a member of the Committee to Intervene Anywhere. The organization's philosophy sounded strikingly similar to Richard Pearl and Dick Cheney's Project for a New American Century. Shrub's explanations have that "I'm a half-wit on speed" with a low-IQ quality so reminiscent of our incumbent President. His parody of a CIA agent proves hilarious primarily because the rhetoric is so near to classic Bush-isms.
