Philadelphia, April 21 - Actor/Activist Danny Glover, Mireille Fanon Mendès-France (Director, Frantz Fanon Foundation), NY State Assemblyman Charles Barron, Professor Linn Washington and other notables will speak to the press on Thursday, April 23 in support of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal as he turns 66 years old. The virtual press conference begins at 1pm, EDT.
The event will announce a full schedule of activities from Friday, April 24 through Sunday, April 26. At 6pm, Friday April 24, a Teach-In entitled "U.S. Empire v. Political Prisoners" will feature Angela Davis, Alice Walker, Fred Hampton Jr. and dozens of other celebrities and political activists. An Instagram Live Dance Party will take place starting at 6pm, Saturday, April 25; and a 12-hour-long "Poetry In Motion" celebration of Mumia's writings begins at 12 noon on Sunday, April 26.

The 24/7 intensified media coverage of the coronavirus story has meant that other news has either been ignored or relegated to the back pages, never to be seen again. The Middle East has been on a boil but coverage of the Trump administration’s latest moves against Iran has been so insignificant as to be invisible. Meanwhile closer to home, the declaration by the ubiquitous Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that current president of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro is a drug trafficker did generate somewhat of a ripple, as did dispatch of warships to the Caribbean to intercept the alleged drugs, but that story also died.
Disease, poverty, and hunger encircle the globe. Even U.S. citizens (we are special, aren't we?) are marked as chattel for the corporate monster consuming lives like a meat grinder on steroids.
Ten companies dominate the market in food production and other companies consolidate without anti-trust enforcement, kowtowing to their hedge fund managers and vulture capitalists pushing for politically "nuanced" gains wherever they can grab them.
Some are denying science, threatening lives and property of private citizens for oil and fracking rights. (see PA/OH/AUS). The call came down, drill baby drill, while they only wanted to make America free from oil imports. It now has become a huge profit-making export market forcing pipelines through private property by eminent domain as a "public utility."
I know it’s stiff competition, but hear me out.
The threat of nuclear apocalypse is higher than ever. The threat of irreversible climate collapse is higher than ever and massively contributed to by militarism. The trillions of dollars being dumped into militarism are desperately needed for actual defense against these dangers including spin-off catastrophes like coronavirus. But military jobs and weapons production jobs (producing weapons for dictatorships and so-called democracies around the world; the U.S. handles 80% of the globe’s foreign weapons sales) are being deemed “essential” and actually being boosted with more funding.

Much of the upcoming election will be through Vote by Mail (VBM). Oregon, Washington, Colorado and Hawaii already use it with great success.
VBM is probably (as Winston Churchill said of democracy) the worst election system there is…except for all the other ones.
Huge problems are virtually certain. We need to be prepared to deal with them.
As people grapple with a planetary pandemic an exciting new movie is premiering just in time to commemorate the 75th anniversary of what marked the end of a much of our last global conflagration. Enemy Lines is available to rent or own on April 24 shortly before the platinum jubilee of Victory in Europe or V-E Day, May 8, 1945, which signified the Allied victory over Hitler and Mussolini. Swedish director Anders Banke’s World War II movie also reminds us of the all but forgotten Mission Alsos, and in doing so provides film and war buffs with a highly entertaining history lesson.
