A group of voters in Alabama is seeking a court order to protect digital ballot images created by 80% of the state's vote counting scanners. The Secretary of State's office has indicated they will continue their past (illegal) practice of destroying these images, which are a crucial element in making public oversight and verifiability of the election possible. In an election as hard-fought as Alabama's December 12 special election for Senate, it's likely post-election investigation will be needed. This will be much more difficult if the ballot images are destroyed.
