Send a letter to Attorney General Holder: 'Prosecute Bush for torture'
George W. Bush has publicly admitted that he authorized torture. He must be held accountable. We are part of a worldwide movement to make sure this happens.
With open torture investigations in Spain, Italy, Australia, Canada, Lithuania, Poland and the United Kingdom, Bush and his cronies have fewer places to hide.
For our movement, this is just the beginning. The American people have a special obligation to make sure Bush is prosecuted for his crimes right here in the United States. Can this happen? You bet. The people and laws of the world are on our side.

"We should not think that the destruction and suffering unleashed by war is limited to Iraq and Afghanistan. Individuals and whole cities here at home have become 'collateral damage.' Millions of people are thrown out of their jobs and then out of their homes. Pressures cascade onto state and local governments as the stagnant economy and frustrated voters further decrease funds for essential services. Our infrastructure isn't bombed, it just slowly rots."
The imperial wars rage on. U.S. drones rain missiles down on innocents in Pakistan; hundreds of children die daily in Afghanistan because of the war; contrary to what the President says, the occupation in Iraq continues. The devastation and misery caused by these wars has not even begun to be addressed. Rather than bringing democracy and freedom to the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. is destroying their countries — perhaps beyond repair.

Thousands of workers and community members converged on the Statehouse yesterday to voice their opposition to Senate Bill 5 and Gov. Kasich's assault on working families and the middle class—but they were shut out. Yesterday, the doors were literally closed to thousands who were rallying in opposition to the bill. And now, they’re even rejecting our emails. That's right: the state legislature is preventing emails being sent by our members from reaching our state senators and representatives. Call toll-free today at 1-888-218-5931 and tell your state senator: I am a constituent who wants to see the Senate focus on jobs—not anti-worker bills like SB5 that will move Ohio’s economy backward.
The reason given for locking the doors Tuesday? They were supposedly “over capacity”—but as an AP story confirms, this argument holds no water. It wasn’t until Democratic lawmakers threatened legal action that the doors were opened at 4 p.m.
Sadly, this is just another example of the attempts to silence the voices of Ohioans who oppose anti-worker bills like SB 5:

Join Rev. Jesse Jackson, Faith Leaders, Elected Officials, Union and Community Leaders on Wednesday, February 23 at 11am at the Teamsters building, 555 E. Rich Street, Columbus, OH 43215. The Senate Insurance, Commerce and Labor Committee is currently considering SB 5 - the end to collective bargaining. We must join together to fight against legislation that will weaken the middle class and put our schools, our safety and our community in jeopardy. 441-9145, brian@progressohio.org.
I guess we shouldn't be surprised.
With Republicans back in charge of the House of Representatives, funding for NPR and PBS is in grave danger. Again.
The Republicans just released their budget proposal, and it zeroes out funding for both NPR and PBS—the worst proposal in more than a decade.1
They probably think that no one will notice these cuts in the midst of so many others. But the millions of listeners and viewers who rely on public broadcasting for "Sesame Street," "All Things Considered," and independent journalism will notice.
We need to tell Republicans that cutting off funding was unacceptable last time they were in charge, and it's unacceptable now.
Add your name to the petition to save NPR and PBS:

We received this from the Bradley Manning Support Network:
Please call the White House Thursday, February 3, 2011, to voice your support for accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower US Army PFC Bradley Manning. Express your concern that Bradley's human rights be respected by the Quantico, Virginia, brig authorities.
Bradley has been held in solitary confinement-like conditions for over eight months, and his trial is still months away. This American citizen-soldier has been convicted of no crime, yet continues to endure inhumane conditions of pre-trial confinement like no other inmate at the Marine Corps brig at Quantico.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs recently stated that the White House was not paying attention to Bradley Manning’s extreme confinement conditions, or the fact that recently pre-approved visitors of Bradley’s have been detained and interrogated by military police in order to block their scheduled visit. It is critical that we educate the White House of this ongoing injustice!

Tues., Feb. 1 There will be a national call in day to the White House in support of Bradley Manning. Please let everyone you know about this. The number for the White House is 202-456-1111. Please call and demand that Pfc Manning be treated fairly and not punished with harsh conditions.
Julian Assange has called Bradley Manning “the world's pre-eminent prisoner of conscience.”
Manning is the Army private accused of leaking the documents that WikiLeaks has been publishing with other media outlets. He is now being held in the Marine Brig in Quantico in very abusive conditions. I am writing you to urge you to take action in his defense.
Manning has not been convicted of anything. He has not even gone to trial, yet he is being held in solitary confinement. He has not even been allowed a real pillow or blanket. He is allowed to exercise for one hour a day, but he is in shackles and goes to another small room where he does figure 8’s. He is not allowed to exercise in his 6 by 12 foot cell. He is awakened at 5 every morning and not allowed to sleep during the day.

The Native American Indian Center of Central Ohio is seeking emergency support in these cold winter months. The Free Press has partnered with the Native American Center for many years for our awards dinner. Your quick donation is needed to keep their much-needed services going for the Native American community and other needy people on the south side, such as: the community food pantry, clothing pantry, the White Bison AA meetings, and health screenings. A couple of hundred dollars would be very helpful to the NAICCO center at this time.
You can send a contribution or become a member of the Native American Indian Center through Paypal from this site:

The tragedy in Tucson has shaken us all to the core. Facts are still coming in, and we all must be careful not to jump to premature conclusions. But in the wake of this disaster one thing is clear: We must put an end to the rhetoric of violence and hate that has exploded in America over the past two years.
That's why we're launching a petition calling on every member of Congress, as well as the major TV and cable news networks, to put an end to the hateful rhetoric and all overt or implied appeals to violence. Click here to sign the petition:

Bradley Manning spent his 23rd birthday on Friday completely isolated, just as he has every day for the last five months months in his cell at the Quantico Marine Base.
Manning is the Marine Private accused of leaking classified documents to Wikileaks. Since July, he has been held in cruel and inhumane conditions akin to how the US detains "enemy combatants." He spends each day completely isolated, with severe restrictions placed on basic activities like sleep and exercise. Yet he has not been convicted of any crime.
The extreme isolation in which Manning has spent every day of the last five months is soul-crushing. It’s already taking its toll: Bradley Manning’s physical and mental health are suffering, according to his attorney and friend who have seen him in prison.
Bradley Manning deserves humane treatment while he awaits trial. Can you please add your name to our letter urging Commanding Officer of Quantico Marine Corp Base to lift the heavy restrictions of Manning’s detention?
