Subpoenas, Searches, and FBI visits carried out in cities across the country: We denounce the Federal Bureau of Investigation harassment of anti-war and solidarity activists in several states across the country. The FBI began turning over six houses in Chicago and Minneapolis this morning, Friday, September 24, 2010, at 8:00 am central time. The FBI handed subpoenas to testify before a federal grand jury to about a dozen activists in Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan. They also attempted to intimidate activists in California and North Carolina.
"The government hopes to use a grand jury to frame up activists. The goal of these raids is to harass and try to intimidate the movement against U.S. wars and occupations, and those who oppose U.S. support for repressive regimes," said Colombia solidarity activist Tom Burke, one of those handed a subpoena by the FBI. "They are designed to suppress dissent and free speech, to divide the peace movement, and to pave the way for more U.S. military intervention in the Middle East and Latin America."

They have historic responsibility and personal opportunity to vote on the START treaty before 2010 elections. Please consider calling on Thursday!!! Thursday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will approve a treaty that will make all of us safer. The Committee will vote to approve the New START Treaty with Russia and send the treaty to the full Senate for a vote. But the tight Senate schedule means that unless Senators from both major political parties publicly call in the next two weeks for an up-or-down vote on this treaty, the Treaty may not be ratified this year.
Please ask your senators to vote “yes” on the New START Treaty.
Website
Here’s why this New START treaty is important both for national security.:
* The treaty makes us safer. The treaty will reduce the number of deployed nuclear weapons in U.S. and Russian arsenals

At a a recent filing at the PUCO, Duke Energy claimed that they cannot meet the energy efficiency standard once it hits 2% annually, and is trying to justify the building of a nuclear plant instead. There are a number of concerns here. First, many market potential studies have proven that Ohio’s standard is both technically and economically feasible, but if Duke is allowed to gut the standard, we think other utilities may try too. Also, many technologies are safer, cleaner, and cheaper than building a new nuclear plant including energy efficiency, wind power, and combined heat and power. We need to make sure the PUCO holds Duke accountable for securing the cheapest and safest resources possible, otherwise customer rates will go up and we will be stuck with a nuclear plant that we don’t need. There are two ways that individuals and organizations can get involved.

You know -- and I know -- that fossil fuels are on the way out. Not only do they foul our air and warm our planet, but getting oil, coal and gas out of the earth has become more difficult and dangerous than ever before.
But we need to level the playing field so clean, solar energy can take off. Support the Solar Bill of Rights
Fossil fuel companies have received tens of billions of taxpayer dollars in federal subsidies for decades -- making it extremely hard for renewable energy sources to compete. Moreover, red tape and unnecessary paperwork make it hard for solar companies to succeed and for everyday Americans to go solar.
The U.S. has some of the best solar resources in the world, especially in our Southwestern deserts. But colder, cloudier countries like Germany and Spain are outpacing us just because they're more solar-friendly.
It's time to stop giving dirty fuels an unfair advantage, and let people decide which energy sources they want to use. Sign the Solar Bill of Rights to make sure solar energy gets a fair chance to lead our clean energy future

Dear friends, On June 30th, HR4645, the Travel Restriction Reform and Export Enhancement Act, passed the Committee by a bi-partisan vote of 25-20.
HR4645 came through committee intact, and combines freedom for US citizens to travel to Cuba with some changes that make it easier for US farmers to trade with Cuba.
The vote on this bill is expected to take place in September, and we know that the forces who want to keep every bit of the US blockade and travel ban in place are working hard to make sure that it won’t pass.
Here is one more step that we can take to make sure that it is clear to the House of Representatives that people in the United States support HR4645. The Latin American Working Group has worked with www.change.org to create a petition that we are asking you to sign and pass on to everyone that you know. Just go to:

NBC’s David Gregory just interviewed General Petraeus on Meet the Press, and he totally failed to ask the tough questions about the Afghanistan War. Instead, he gave Petraeus a platform to claim we’re “making progress,” a well-worn message aimed at convincing elites to ignore the massive public opposition to extending the war. If the rest of the media fail to ask hard questions during Petraeus’ upcoming media tour, there’s a chance he could get what he wants: the freedom to extend this brutal, futile war.
Sign our
petition to tell the next journalists on Petraeus' media tour to ask tough questions and expose his effort to extend the Afghanistan War.
CBS’ Katie Couric, FOX News’ Jennifer Griffin, and ABC’s George Stephanopoulos are in line to talk to the general. Since Couric is next, we’ll start with her. Tell her to ask tough questions about Petraeus' claims of "progress" and his attempt to extend the Afghanistan War.

Google's motto is "Don't be evil," but Google is about to cut a deal with Verizon that would end the Internet as we know it.
According to a front-page New York Times story, the deal would allow "Verizon to speed some online content to Internet users more quickly if the content's creators are willing to pay for the privilege."1
It would create fast Internet lanes for the largest corporations and slow lanes for the rest of us.
That is why CREDO is joining MoveOn, Free Press, and Color of Change in rallying Google users to tell Google, "Don't be evil."
Speak up for a free and open Internet by clicking here to automatically sign the petition to Google. With massive amounts of public pressure, we can stop this deal.
Google is furiously backpedaling on its closed door negotiations with Verizon over the future of the Internet — a direct result of a strong and immediate public backlash. The company has denied some details from the New York Times story, but won't say definitively that it is not striking a deal with Verizon that will stop the FCC from imposing net neutrality rules.

For Over A Week Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo Has Been Held In The Hole At Victorville Prison Despite Committing Any Infraction. Once Again the US government has imposed another cruel punishment against Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Cuban 5 imprisoned in the US for fighting against terrorism.
On July 21st, without committing any infraction, Gerardo was taken to the hole. The hole is an inhumane windowless space of 7 x 3 feet reserved for prisoners who the prison authorities, for what ever reason, want to isolate. Gerardo is sharing this small space with another prisoner and there is very little ventilation because the air comes from just a small vent on the top of a wall. Temperatures in Victorville are running as high as 105 degrees now and in the space of this tiny cell it is around 95 degrees. He is not allowed to take a shower and is being taken outside in a cage only one hour every other day. Gerardo has been seen by his sister Isabel through a glass with a phone.

Although it was reported as a wholesale victory for Monsanto, the recent Supreme Court decision on "Roundup Ready" alfalfa has actually put food activists in a good position to maintain the ban on Monsanto's genetically engineered GMO seeds.
The court ruled that the planting of GMO alfalfa is still illegal, but it assigned authority to the USDA to determine whether to allow some provisional planting to go forward as soon as next spring. The responsibility for maintaining a total ban on the GMO seeds — and protecting organic crops from likely contamination — falls squarely on the shoulders of USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack.
