Over 50 GLBT and allied community members attended a Candidate’s Night on Thursday evening at the King Avenue United Methodist Church hosted by Stonewall CAN (Community Action Network), Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio and the Log Cabin Republicans. Sixteen candidates and campaign representatives attended the forum and presented on various issues, including, discrimination against GLBT persons, domestic partner benefits and ensuring a safe environment for GLBT youth in Columbus public schools.

The Stonewall CAN Board and staff were pleased with the increased attendance, demonstrating growing support for political activity by the GLBT community. “I was impressed by the equal representation of the two major parties,” stated Kate Anderson, Stonewall CAN Executive Director. She added, “Stonewall CAN’s efforts to work with both sides of the aisle was very evident last night.” Chad Foust, President of the Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio, echoed Ms. Anderson by stating, “the Stonewall Democrats were honored to co-host this candidate’s forum and help stress the importance of members of our community staying active in the political process and becoming part of the solution instead of remaining part of the problem.” “I was pleased with the turnout of republican candidates and even more pleased with their understanding and positions on issues of importance to the GLBT community, stated, Bill Brownson, National Chair of the Log Cabin Republicans and Columbus chapter member.” He added, “It continues a trend that has been ongoing for several years showing republican candidates recognize the importance of being inclusive.”

The Stonewall Community Action Network plans on announcing its candidate endorsements by October 6th and will be distributing voter guides.
