The federal government is warning of increased terrorism threats this summer, saying it is highly likely that terrorists will try to strike at one of the season's major events, perhaps even at one of the political conventions. They have identified seven more Muslim extremists who may be plotting a strike on America. But some are calling this a political ploy to boost support from the president. Am I right that if the country is truly at danger, this is not time for playing politics?

President Bush spelled out a new plan for Iraq last week, asking the UN for a resolution of support for turning the country over to Iraqi control. The debate now is over how much control to give the Iraqis. France, Germany, China and many in Iraq are insisting that the new government have final say over how coalition forces are used in the country, and even the right to ask them to leave immediately.  Am I right that placing U.S. forces at the mercy of a tentative Iraqi government would invite even greater chaos?

Comedian Bill Cosby is under fire for saying what a lot of people, black and white, have been thinking: That low-income African-Americans have to stop blaming racism and poverty for all of their problems, and start concentrating on healing their families and raising their children. Am I right that Cosby has opened an important debate, and shouldn't back off his message?

Rising gas prices are bad news for the pocketbook, but apparently not for Detroit's automakers. The Big 3 are saying that they don't expect higher gas prices to affect the sale of gas-guzzling Sport Utility Vehicles and are unleasing a new stable of high horse power SUVS and trucks. Am I right that gas is going to have to cost a whole lot more than $2 a gallon to cool the market's love of big trucks?

Michigan emergency rooms say they are swampped with mental patients, who have no place else to go in the health care system. Gov. Granholm pledge to make caring for these patients a top priority when she was campaigning, but so far, she's come up with no solution. Am I right that finding some way to care for the mentally ill should get more attention from the Governor and Legislature?
