Glen Tuomaala

Since Glen and his wife moved to Columbus he has been a Columbus Commissioner with the Far East Area Commission and continued to teach French horn private lessons. He graduated from Bowling Green State University as a double major in Music Education and French Horn Performance. He is also a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music with a Masters degree in Music Education. As a teacher he has taught students from kindergarten to the university level at both public and private institutions. The most fun (and exhausting) has been teaching 2nd graders. They are surprising.

Prior to writing for the Columbus Free Press he published music reviews for Band and Orchestra News and had articles in a variety of different journals. In 2023 his method book “Amusement Park Etudes” was published by Forte Music Press and reviewed by the International Horn Society. When not writing he makes abstract art. www.instagram.com/abstract43213

Glen enjoys asking questions.

Most people get distracted with life and stop being curious about the world we live. It’s comfortable, but dangerous. “Questions are a sign of intelligence” is his mantra.

  • Why does our city government choose to not serve the needs of the people?
  • Why is corruption and a lack of empathy good enough for the status quo?
  • Why do we continue to defund our schools to benefit the wealthy and the powerful?

Thanks to the most important teachers of his life: Herbert Spencer, Horn Professor Bowling Green State University; Elizabeth Wing, Chair, Graduate Music Education, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music; his beautiful wife, his parents (he won the parent lottery), and his students. Students are fantastic teachers, but you have to listen to them.
