Everybody Knows with Dr. Bob and Dan-o
As the sumer is heating up, so is our movement. In one week we join together to stand up to Big Oil and Gas. Communities across the region will join together in the heart of the region's oil industry to call for a ban on injection wells in Ohio. Nearly sixty percent of the 600,000,000 gallons of waste accepted into Ohio's injection wells in 2012, came from states other than Ohio -- and without a place to dump waste, fracking across the region will become much tougher.
We know that Gov. John Kasich and many in the Ohio Legislature have big plans to drastically increase the number of wells in Ohio. We also know they have been given big money to do so.
Although the fight against big money remains, we also know we have the power of people and will no longer tolerate handouts to the oil and gas industry.
350.org co-founder Bill McKibben, as well as leaders from the grassroots anti-fracking movement will be there -- can you be there too? Everything is happening on July 29th in Courthouse Square, in Warren, Ohio at 1PM. Sign up to RSVP here:

Trayvon Martin is dead, and his killer is walking free. The injustice of the situation is both palpable and maddening.
It is clear that had George Zimmerman not acted as an armed vigilante almost a year and a half ago, Trayvon Martin would still be alive.
It was Zimmerman who took it upon himself to determine that Trayvon Martin, a young African American, was "suspicious." Zimmerman then disregarded the instructions of a 911 dispatcher, first stalking and then initiating a confrontation with Trayvon Martin that left the unarmed youth dead.
But while a jury in Florida incomprehensibly decided not to hold Zimmerman responsible for this senseless murder, the federal government can still take action.
Tell the Attorney General Eric Holder to bring civil rights charges against George Zimmerman. Click here to automatically sign the petition.
It's hard not to conclude that Trayvon Martin was a victim of this senseless crime because of his race.
And whether intended or not, the message sent by Zimmerman's acquittal is that the value our culture places on a human life depends upon our skin color.

The UN and the World Medical Association both require Guantanamo detainees to have access to independent medical advice and medical examinations when they need it. But they aren't getting it!
In response to this violation and a public plea by detainees, 150 doctors from around the world (including the U.S.) have published an open letter to President Obama urging him to correct this injustice. Support these doctors! Tell Obama to give Guantanamo detainees the medical attention they require.
Several detainees are engaged in a hunger strike -- it's their only means of bringing attention to their plight. In retaliation, military doctors are force-feeding them in a painful and abusive way.
The detainees are pleading for independent medical care because they say military doctors are compromising their duty to patients and putting their loyalty to their superiors first. They don't trust the military doctors, and without trust, acceptable medical care is impossible.

The new legislation introduced in the Ohio House is "one of the nation's all-time worst abortion bills," according to Think Progress. I agree.
Between the state budget and bills intended to shame and demean our patients, Ohio women have never been the subject of such severe political attacks. We're fighting back and we need you with us. Next week, join me and some Planned Parenthood patients for a telephone town hall.
Register here.
During this call, I’ll be answering questions from Ohio women just like you -- women who want to know what affect politicians' actions will have on their health care.
After registering, the night of the call, the only thing you need to do to participate is answer the phone. On the evening of June 19, we'll call you. Just stay on the line to hear us discuss the current political environment with Planned Parenthood patients and supporters. You'll have the chance to participate in the discussion if you choose.
Please join us to learn how to fight back.

Recent news stories have revealed the breathtaking scope of President Obama's indiscriminate spying on American citizens who aren't suspected of any wrongdoing. The government has been using data from Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple, to spy Americans.
There is something fundamentally un-American and deeply undemocratic about this kind of government surveillance. But since 9/11, we have seen first George W. Bush and now Barack Obama engage in shockingly broad executive power grabs that undermine our constitutionally protected civil liberties, all in the name of "national security."
President Obama is a constitutional scholar who ran on the platform of transparency in government. We don't believe he has the constitutional right to collect and examine the telephone records of virtually all Americans. But if he thinks that he has the authority to spy on Americans, he should acknowledge these programs and provide his legal rationale for them.
Demand President Obama acknowledge his administration's spying programs and provide a full legal justification for indiscriminately spying on Americans.

Earthquakes continue to rattle the damaged nuclear facility at Fukushima Daiichi. The list below shows only the strongest ones- there are weaker ones almost daily. The good news is that the radioactivity does decay with time, decreasing the likelihood of a catastrophic nuclear fire. The bad news is that the buildings housing the spent fuel pools and melted-down reactor cores also decay with time, bombarded as they are with radioactivity, and shaken by earthquakes. Concrete crumbles, pipes break, rats gnaw at wire systems.
TEPCO, Tokyo Electric Power, which runs the facility, is in reactive mode, literally putting out fires, repairing damaged equipment, dealing with overflows of radioactive water. The Japanese mafia, Yakuza, drains off a good portion of the massive public funding poured into the containment/cleanup process. The workers are overexposed to radiation, and even so can only be on site for a short time until they've reached over the maximum exposure allowed, so the supply of workers is running short.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's new advocacy group FWD.us is running TV ads in support of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And Facebook is censoring graphics that protest.
RootsAction is running a petition on our website and on Facebook telling Zuckerberg to stop.
FWD.us is a group of plutocrats who, instead of advocating for education funding, are advocating for the immigration of educated workers. And in order to win over certain members of Congress, FWD.us has funded two front groups, one for Republicans and one for Democrats. Both are buying TV ads supporting Congress members who support tar sands and drilling in ANWR.
Why is FWD.us dragging the world backwards? Click here to tell Zuckerberg and his billionaire buddies that our grandchildren would appreciate a livable climate more than the knowledge that we further boosted the wealth of the already obscenely wealthy.
After you sign the petition at RootsAction, please be sure to click the link to share it on Facebook.

Our Pro Bono, Low Bono, and Funded Activities
Bob Fitrakis has long been involved in voting rights litigation. Fitrakis was an Election Protection attorney on November 2, 2004 in Franklin County. Fitrakis rose to national prominence during the U.S. Presidential election of 2004 and called the first public hearings on election irregularities in Ohio. He filed a challenge in the Ohio Supreme Court to Ohio's presidential election results in the cases Moss v. Bush and Moss v. Moyer with three other attorneys. He testified on election irregularities before the Congressional Black Caucus and Progressive Caucus. Fitrakis served as co-counsel in the King-Lincoln-Bronzeville civil rights case.
Connie Gadell-Newton started working with Bob Fitrakis at the Free Press in 2008, when she requested the records of purged voters from the 88 County Boards of Elections. Connie and Bob also sued to get Cynthia McKinney, Green Party Presidential Candidate, on the ballot in 2008, and appointed Election Observers through the Green Party to protect the vote. These activities were supported by funding that was donated through the Ohio Litigation Fund.

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more.
Many global corporations have also started to more actively support IWD by running their own internal events and through supporting external ones. For example, on 8 March search engine and media giant Google some years even changes its logo on its global search pages. Year on year IWD is certainly increasing in status. The United States even designates the whole month of March as 'Women's History Month'.
So make a difference, think globally and act locally !! Make everyday International Women's Day. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.
