While on vacation we made contact with a friend's family on the Rosebud Reservation. Rosebud Reservation is made up of 21 "communities", much like our townships. We visited the Stead family in Mission in Antelope Community. Antelope is the largest of the 21 communities with a population of about 2700 people. Half of those are eighteen years of age or younger! There are very few jobs.
Theresa Whitehorse Stead has birthed and raised 6 children and adopted and raised three more. She has fostered 605 children! There are always children in their home.
Robert and Theresa Stead [both recovering alcoholics] have built a ministry that struggles to solve some of the great problems of the people there. They have built a church and hold worship services, Christian education, and feed and help clothe school children, provide basic needs for those who have no resources of their own. She cares for the youngest school children after school to make sure they have a hot meal.
They are now developing Timothy House, which will be like a half-way house for five young men who have no place to go when released from juvenile prison nearby. One of the problems has been that when the youth are released they go back into environments that do not support their recovery from alcoholism, drug addiction, developing spiritually, and leading a healthy life.
They have done all of this over the years without anything but faith in God's grace to provide. She related miracle after miracle that brought it all into being. They are totally dependent on donations, mostly from outside the reservation because unemployment there is so high.
When I asked what they needed most she said that they desperately need winter coats and jackets for the children ages five through twelve. She says they come to school with just lightweight jackets and sweaters and she tries to find them clothing that will protect them from the harsh S. Dakota winters.
So I'm asking if you can help her protect the children by sending a warm coat or jacket, new or gently used, for a child five years to twelve years old. Or if you'd prefer you can send her money to purchase them. However, there are no stores on the reservation and she would have to travel at least an hour to the nearest place to buy them. It might be easier to order a coat or jacket on-line and have it delivered there. Perhaps you can find someone to share the cost with you. This is a ministry that has proven itself worthy of support.
If your shipper does not deliver to P.O. Boxes just send it to Theresa Stead, White Horse Ministry , N. Antelope Community, Mission, SD 57555. If you are sending through the postal service their P.O. Box is 903.
Also include Bob and Theresa and their ministry in your prayers.
