Duty to Warn

Geoengineering, according to the Royal Society of the United Kingdom, is defined as "the deliberate large-scale manipulation of the planetary environment to counteract anthropogenic (man-made or corporate-caused)climate change" and divides methods into two types: carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere, and solar radiation management aimed at reducing heat coming in (from the sun)or reflecting more of it out.

I write this week’s Duty to Warn column the day after the biannual Duluthairshow.com (July 7-8, 2018). Sunday evening, over 8 hours after the last the last plane touched down, a heavy thunderstorm partially cleansed the area of some of the toxic aviation fuel residue that contaminated the air, soil and water in the area. The weather during the previous 72 hours however, was perfect, with clear blue skies and 80 degree temps that have persisted now for nearly 4 days. Today, Monday, July 9, the skies continue to be deep blue and clear with actual cumulous clouds.

Aerial view of the outlet of tiny Hazeltine Creek (normally 6 feet wide) as it empties into Quesnel Lake (a once world-famous salmon fishery) at the head of the 600 mile-long Fraser River estuayr that is now contaminated with 2.5 billion gallons of toxic sulfide mine waste (including sulfuric acid) that was discharged in 2014. The brown color represents the trunks of the huge trees that were up-rooted during the deluge. The diameter of some of the trees measured half the width of the original creek.

Minnesota’s Republican Party is hoping that good-hearted, environmentally-conscious Minnesotans who appreciate clean drinking and fishing water will subvert their ideals, ignore their better angels and vote for the Republican Party’s “red state” agenda next fall.

Supporters of America’s current “Polluter-in-Chief” Donald J. Trump, whose environmentally-destructive policies could literally turn the waters of northeastern Minnesota’s Partridge, Embarrass and upper St Louis Rivers into red, highly acidic, sulfuric acid-contaminated water that cannot support activities of normal life, (including fishing, boating, swimming or the growing of wild rice).

Note that the break in the abandoned Hector mine pit near Biwabik on April 24, 2018 discharged massive amounts of toxic red-stained water into the Embarrass River, which then emptied into the Embarrass Lake, with uncertain, but probably devastating long-term consequences. See photo below.

Every spring, as the calendar ticks off the two month span between April 4th (the assassination anniversary date of anti-war, anti-racist, anti-poverty activist Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr) and June 5th (the assassination anniversary date of anti-war  and pro-racial equality presidential candidate Senator Robert F. Kennedy), many progressive, anti-war, anti-racism, non-violent activists around the world such as myself have spent a lot of time thinking about how different America and the world might have been if the political, military and economic powers that were behind the Vietnam War and in charge of those two assassinations had decided instead to allow the will of the people – rather than the use of cowardly firearms – to decide America’s future.

In 2010 the pro-corporate 5/4 United States Supreme Court decided, in the Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission ruling that favored multibillionaire corporate elites and their trans-national corporations by making it easier for them to steal US elections by allowing unlimited, anonymous monetary “contributions”/bribes to both major US political parties, political action groups and the many politicians who were then beholden to their newest corporate paymasters.

Here is a little known but extremely relevant fact: The first campaign to “Stop the Stigma of Mental Illness” was launched many years ago by the psycho-pharmaceutical industry (Big Pharma) that makes tens of billions of dollars annually by selling unaffordable, often highly addictive, brain-altering drugs that are then promoted by psychiatrists and family physicians as being necessary for the rest of the drug-taking patient’s lives.

Why doesn’t that surprise anybody? The norm for all capitalist enterprises is to make money by hook or by crook.

With a seemingly altruistic agenda of understanding and compassionately dealing with unfortunate people that are somehow different than the rest of us, the fact is that the campaign is all about marketing a product rather than ending the “stigma” of so-called “mental illnesses”.

It has been over a decade since I came to the realization that the entire profession of medicine had been bamboozled by the propaganda coming from the Big Pharma drug and vaccine maker Merck & Company that its so-called “fracture-preventative” drug Fosamax had defrauded us doctors and our patients by falsely claiming a “50% efficacy rate” in the prevention of bone fractures in osteopenic/osteoporotic women.

I had always been suspicious of pharmaceutical sales reps and the Big Pharma corporations that they worked for, and I had wondered exactly where they got the 50% effectiveness figure. So I finally got around to actually digging into and studying the clinical study statistics that were in the FDA-approved product insert that all drug and vaccine makers are forced to publish and include with the product (and which only a few physicians ever take the time or inclination to read).
