Hours after President Biden declared that “democracy has prevailed” during his inaugural address, longtime Republican strategist Karl Rove urged Republicans to pressure GOP election officials and legislators to create “a model election code” to reconsider the laws surrounding 2020’s two voting options that lead to the presidential election’s record turnout.

“Republicans should also encourage GOP secretaries of state and state lawmakers to develop a model election code,” Rove wrote in a January 20 commentary for the Wall Street Journal entitled, “The Republican Future Starts Now.”

“The job of proposing electoral reforms shouldn’t be based on the unsupported claims of widespread fraud peddled by Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell,” Rove continued. “Instead, the goal should be to suggest measures that restore public confidence in our democracy. How do states with extensive mail-in and early voting like Florida and Texas get it right?”

In this moment of peaceful transition toward a recommitted democracy, we must make sure the Biden administration keeps its promise of bringing families together. Edith Espinal and Miriam Vargas are two mothers that deserve for this promise to ring true. They have both been denied the opportunity to be reunited with their families until now.

Call Rep. Joyce Beatty and Sen. Sherrod Brown today and encourage them to call the Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on behalf of both Edith and Miriam.

Edith has been in sanctuary at Columbus Mennonite Church since October 2017 and Miriam at First English Lutheran Church since June 2018. As we began the process of reconciliation, our Congress must act now and do more than pause the current deportation laws. Let’s start by getting Edith and Miriam home with their families.

History is being written in the United States today. Even the most pessimistic about the prospects of American democracy have rarely ventured out this far while offering a bleak analysis of America’s future, whether in terms of political polarization at home or global standing abroad.

As shocking and, certainly, telling as the images of thousands of American protesters taking over the symbols of America’s federal, representative democracy in Washington DC on January 6, it was only a facet in a far more complex and devastating political trajectory that has been in the making for years.

It is finally over. Joe Biden has been inaugurated President of the United States while his predecessor Donald Trump has retired to Florida. Trump intends to remain the driving force in the Republican Party but there are many in the GOP who would like to see him gone completely and the national media is obliging by depriving him of a “voice,” cutting him off from his preferred social media. The Democratic Party’s top “megadonor” Israeli film producer Haim Saban goes one step farther, recommending that all the media stop reporting on Trump and his activities, thereby taking away his platform and making him disappear politically speaking.

I and many other people with diabetes want to know why the phase 1B rollout changed from including all people with type 1 diabetes (outlined here on January 14th, 2021) to including only those deemed by the state as "severe" (now specified here in Governor DeWine’s January 19th press release). This week I called the Ohio Department of Health coronavirus phone line to find answers; no one could illuminate any reason why I, as an immunocompromised person with type 1 diabetes, could not receive the vaccine during the phase 1B rollout.

Study group on Angela Davis’ “Are Prisons Obsolete?

Sunday, January 24, 1pm

Angela Davis’ “Are Prisons Obsolete?” is a great introduction to prison abolition and will help us gain a deeper understanding of the Prison-Industrial Complex. As we navigate the pressing issue of police brutality, it is also important that we question the role of prisons in our society.

Join us on Zoom to discuss Davis’ work and to learn how to discuss prison abolition with your community. This study group will take place in two parts — chapters 1-3 on January 24 and chapters 4-6 on February 7.

RSVP at tinyurl.com/CbusSocialistAlt and we will send you the Zoom link.

Representative Mike Skindell will soon be re-introducing the Ohio Health Care Act, a bill that would provide progressive financing of health care and extend the benefits to all Ohioans, regardless of employment status, financial status, marital status or any other kind of status.  The bill provides for comprehensive benefits including dental, vision and mental health care.

Rep. Skindell will be sending out co-sponsor letters, inviting other members of the Ohio House to sign on to the bill.  This is important as it shows support for the bill.   We need you to urge your state representative to sign on as a co-sponsor.

Sample language:

Please endorse the Ohio Health Care Act, to be introduced by Representative Mike Skindell, by signing on as a co-sponsor.

The Ohio Health Care Act ensures that no Ohioan will be without health coverage during a pandemic.   It also gives the state a way to control health care costs and benefits businesses by removing the burden of healthcare from them.   Small businesses, the backbone of our local economy, will benefit greatly.
