Democratic institutions are in danger

Today there is a deep split in public opinion in the United States. Democratic institutions are in danger from racism and neo-fascism. Progressives are fighting to save the values and institutions on which their country was founded. They are fighting to save America's soul.

Racism, discrimination and xenophobia

Progressives today would like to eliminate all forms of discrimination, whether based on race, religion, ethnicity, or gender. They are opposed by white nationalist groups, especially in rural areas and among white industrial workers and evangelicals, who fear that their own groups will soon be outnumbered by those who differ from them in ethnicity, race or religion.

“Somebody ought to put a bullet in her skull. Back in the day, our forefathers would have put a bullet in her [expletive].”

These words, uttered by some lost soul, were directed at U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar earlier this year. He had called her office and talked to a staffer, calling the congresswoman a terrorist and spewing out his death threat on behalf of the fantasy Founding Fathers. He was later arrested.

An Israeli attack on Gaza was imminent, and not because of any provocations by Palestinian groups in the besieged, impoverished Gaza Strip. The Israeli military escalation was foreseeable because it factors neatly in Israel’s contentious political scene. The war was not a question of “if”, but “when”.

The answer came on November 12, when the Israeli military launched a major strike against Gaza, killing an Islamic Jihad Commander, Bahaa Abu al-Ata, along with his wife Asma.

Mumia Abu Jamal

Mumia Abu-Jamal and his supporters are closer than ever to winning his release after 38 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), former district attorneys, and other political higher ups who participated in the frame up are now shaking in their boots because an innocent man may be given a new trial in which judicial, police and prosecutorial misconduct will be exposed.

Formerly hidden evidence disclosed by current District Attorney Larry Krasner justifies a new trial and Abu-Jamal’s immediate release. That decision is currently in the hands of State Superior Court judges.

Pam Africa, of the International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal and a MOVE member, said “Abu-Jamal should have been released by Krasner on the basis of judicial and prosecutorial misconduct--as many others have been recently. By doing this,  Krasner would be following the color of the law.”

A box saying Controlling every uterus in Ohio is NOT a religious choice #Valuemychoice

Under the cover of the night on November 14, Ohio legislators introduced House Bill 413, another bill intended to further regulate individuals options to control and manage their own bodies as well as penalize physicians for thoughtful caring for their patients without fear of political interference.

Lauren Blauvelt-Copelin, vice president of government affairs and public advocacy for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio gave the following statement in response:

“This is yet another attack on the sacred physician-patient relationship and on reproductive health care. This extreme bill goes to outlandish levels to further restrict Ohioans decisions around health care and parenting.

“Similar to the other seven active pieces of legislation making their way through the Ohio Statehouse, Ohioans deserve better than politicians that are obsessed with regulating other people’s bodies.

Women holding banner about closing SOA and yelling

This year, hundreds will gather at the gates of the School of Americas (SOA)/The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) at Fort Benning, Georgia from November 15-17, as Latin America again experiences violent repression by US-trained and funded state forces.
