They’ve grown up in an era of social media, student debt, climate anxiety, and political gridlock — and now, a new generation of leaders is stepping up to the mic. From Gen Z newcomers to Millennials to younger members of Gen X, new generations of Ohioans are increasingly taking their seats in city halls, county offices, and the Statehouse.

These leaders bring different life experiences, new policy priorities, and fresh ideas to institutions still largely shaped by older generations. And as Baby Boomers begin to age out of public life, the next wave is preparing to take the reins.

But entering public office at a younger age comes with its own set of challenges — from skepticism about experience to navigating power structures not designed for digital natives. So how are these elected officials making their mark? What motivates them to lead — and what do they want to change?
