To gauge the level of hatred entertained by liberals for the Bush administration, take a look at the best-seller lists. Rubbing shoulders in the top tiers we find Michael Moore, Al Franken, Paul Krugman and Molly Ivins all pouring sarcastic rebukes on Bush2 and, categorically or by implication, suggesting that in favoring the very rich and looting the economy in their interests Bush stands in despicable contrast to his immediate predecessor in the Oval Office.

So just get a Democrat, any Democrat, back in the White House, and the skies will begin to clear again.

But suppose a less forgiving scrutiny of the Clinton years discloses that these years did nothing to alter the rules of the neoliberal game that began in the Reagan/Thatcher era with the push to boost after-tax corporate profits, shift bargaining power to business, erode social protections for workers, make the rich richer, the middle tier, at best, stand still, and the poor get poorer.

Ask Your Member of Congress to Lift Restrictions on Travel to Cuba Our Country Will Win Friends Through Compassion-Not Hatred

The U.S. government does not allow Americans to spend money in Cuba, effectively banning travel there. But now-in a wave of sanity from Washington-Republicans and Democrats in Congress have voted to lift the travel restrictions.

However, forces in Congress will try to use legislative trickery to stop the Cuba amendment from reaching the President's desk.

One of your representatives in Congress is one of a handful who sit on a key committee that can ensure that the Cuba amendment remains in tact.

If you want your legislator to ensure that travel restrictions to Cuba are lifted, and you're a TrueMajority member, just reply to this email by clicking "Reply" and "Send" in your email program to send your message (text below). If you'd like to customize the message to your Senator, click here:

Issue One on the November ballot is part of Governor Bob Taft's plan to create jobs in Ohio.  That would be a good thing since the recent one-penny sales tax increase destroyed 99,000 jobs according to The Beacon Hill Institute.  Unfortunately, Issue One's own supporters say it will not even create one-third the number of jobs lost.  Issue One will do more harm than good to Ohio, and its far-reaching implications will shock Ohioans.

While there are many reasons to vote NO on Issue One, three stand out.

  1)      Issue One will tear down a firewall that has existed in the Ohio Constitution since the 1850's, which prohibited the use of public money for private businesses.  This provision was put in place after so many of the canal and railroad companies, which the state government invested in, went bankrupt.

COLUMBUS - More than 275 concerned Ohioans attended a rally at the Ohio Statehouse Thursday then marched along High Street to greet President George W. Bush as he made his way to a $2,000 per person fund-raiser for his own re-election.

State Rep. Dan Stewart (D-Columbus) led a group of elected Democrats and labor leaders as they pressed Ohioans to speak out about the failed economic policies of the Bush administration and work to bring new leadership to the nation that will focus on the needs of middle class families and Ohio workers.

"Today we are playing 'Truth and Dare,' not 'Truth or Dare'," Stewart said. "We are here today to tell the truth and dare to do what is right."

Ohio Senate Minority Leader Greg DiDonato (D-New Philadelphia), Ohio House Assistant Minority Leader Joyce Beatty (D-Columbus), U.S. Senate candidate and state Sen. Eric Fingerhut (D-Shaker Heights), David Caldwell, president of the Columbus-Franklin County AFL-CIO, and Dave Reagan, president of Service Employees International Union 1199 led the enthusiastic crowd.

Folk singer Connie Harris entertained the onlookers before they marched to
As would be expected in the Age of Bush, an energy bill that will affect all Americans for decades to come, and cost us hundreds of billions of dollars, is being hashed out in secret.  It's a direct off-shoot of those notorious secret meetings held by Vice President Dick Cheney, about which he refuses to disclose anything, despite a string of court orders.  A final Congressional vote may come this week.

For New Englanders, it will mean critical shortages of natural gas within the very near future, plus soaring oil prices and escalating danger from nuclear power plants -Vermont Yankee, Pilgrim, Seabrook and the two Millstone reactors still operating in Connecticut.

The "Senator from Big Nuke"---Pete Domenici of New Mexico---is working with the "Rep. from Big Oil"---W.J. "Billy" Tauzin of Louisiana---to cook up legislation that will mean billions in benefits to their big campaign donors and a nightmare of environmental, health and social costs to the rest of us, for generations to come.

These two fossil-nuke flunkies have taken control of the Senate-House
The president's air pollution legislation currently pending in Congress is a disaster for eastern and southeastern Ohio. It ensures that the old, dirty power plants in the Ohio River Valley, like the Gavin, Sammis and Cardinal plants, continue to trigger asthma attacks, endanger public health and pollute the environment.

On *Friday, Nov. 7*, you can do something to stop it. You can meet directly with Congressman Strickland and tell him how you feel about it.

A face to face meeting is the single most effective way to make sure your voice is heard. We are organizing a meeting with U.S. Representative Ted Strickland of the sixth congressional district on Friday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. in Athens for citizens from all over eastern and southeastern Ohio to speak up against air pollution and the administration's misnamed "Clear Skies" plan.

Ann Coulter is the Right kind of woman. Strutting her political stuff, all flowing hair and short skirts, Coulter validates right-wing misogynist bluster and class arrogance. Ms. Coulter mistakes capitulation for independent thinking, when in fact, as long as she echoes Dennis Miller or Bill O'Reilly-attacking anyone who questions American aggression abroad, claiming that Bill Clinton lies with ease, and chanting "classic liberal scandal!"-she'll have a job. To be sure, it is a lucrative career move; reactionary polemic pays well.

Like Dennis Miller, whose transformation from liberal stand-up to conservative rant man boggles the senses, Ann Coulter has broken the code for success in the American hyper-conservative media: embrace the ideology of the moment and claim it as one's own. In the world of mostly male, self-important talk television, female collusion makes an if-you-can't-beat-'em-join-'em kind of sense. In this case, like Camille Paglia, for example, a woman spouts the illiberal ideas most damaging to other women and earns access to those prizes-wealth, television face time, book contracts-largely controlled by men.

As the Third National Student Conference of the Palestine Solidarity Movement rapidly approaches, members of the Accommodations Committee are currently trying to determine how many students and activists we can offer low-income housing options to during the weekend of the conference.

Guests will be staying anytime from Friday night until Sunday afternoon, and will require space to sleep and safely store belongings.  If you are in the Columbus area and are willing to provide housing it will certainly be much appreciated!

Please provide all of the following information to Rachel Machesky at :

1. Your name, phone number, and street address

2. Number of guests that you can accommodate

3. Dates your space is available

4. Forms of transportation available to and from the campus area (e.g.    if you will be able to provide transportation for your guests, or    if nearby and easily accessible bus routes are running)

5. What guests may need to bring in order to sleep at their assigned    housing (i.e. how may beds are available, if guests will need    sleeping bags, pillows, towels, etc.)
Enter the world of Paul Krugman, a world either dark (the eras of Bush One and Bush Two) or bathed in light (when Bill was king). "What do you think of the French Revolution?" someone is supposed to have asked Chou En-Lai. "Too soon to tell," Chou laconically riposted. Krugman entertains no such prudence. Near the beginning of his collection of columns, "The Great Unraveling," Krugman looks back on Clinton-time. A throb enters his voice. He becomes a Hesiod, basking in the golden age.

In Washington, DC, it was a highly reenergized Anti-War Movement that rallied on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 25, 2003. Under a blue sky, with temperatures hovering in the mid-60s, they marched by the thousands. They demanded that all U.S. troops get out of Iraq and chanted slogans, like: "No more lies. Bush has got to go. Bring the troops home."

The route took the protesters from the Washington Monument, to north on 17th St., crossing H. St., near fabled Lafayette Square, (which sits in front of the White House), then down 15th Street to Pennsylvania Ave, while passing the Justice Department on their right, and the FBI Building on their left, to finish off on Constitution Ave., in front of "The Ellipse".
